Title: 92 EFI Samurai idle control valve question
Post by: whitetrash on January 08, 2012, 10:22:11 AM
I have a 92 Samurai that seems to idle really rough and hasnt really run right after an ECM repair.  If I pull the hose off the idle control valve solenoid it sucks a lot of air throught the hose and although idles faster seems to run much better.  When i put it back on the idle decreases and the engine seems to act like its missing or starving on fuel. If I block the hose with my finger the engine will sputter and die. I have new plugs, wires, cap and rotor and checked timing with ecm diagnostic mode jumpered at 10 degrees before TDC. It once showed a code 45 but typically never gives a check engine light exept on key acc position with the other check lights. I dont have a tach so couldnt tell you rpms. I recently changed the fuel filter and dropped the tank and cleaned and checked the fuel pump filter.
Any tips to check the idle control solenoid or input to the ECM would be appreciated.

If it started running poorly as soon as you put the repaired ECM in, then I'd say the ECM is the problem.  I have tried to fix some of my ECMs and if you don't get certain things fixed, or fixed right, then it will run like crap.  Sometimes there are things wrong with an ECM that is hard to find and fix.
What I would do, is try to borrow a known good ECM (or try your ECM in another 90-95 samurai) and see if a different ECM fixes the running issue (or see if the poor running follows your ECM to the other samurai).
Who fixed your ECM?  Is there any type of warranty that came with the repair?

Thanks, I will try another ecm and see what happens.  Im in the Knoxville Tn area if anyone close has got an EFI model to check with.  The ECM repair has a warranty through David Ruberg at Speedo Repair Guy in MN. but I would really like to verify if its the problem with another unit instead of be without the vehicle for another week first. Im amazed that the 20 plus year old electronics hold out this well.
I appreciate the response and this community of people keeping the Zuks going.
