Ask the dealer you got it from for a good topcoat for further
UV protection. It will slow down the UV deterioration which
will happen in a couple years.
-
I do have the UV one. It looks great I couldnt be more happy with it. All done for now. next im getting the white star on doors and hood. and serial numbers.
-
itll be a bit darker when it is all done drying. Once dried the stars go on!
-
I'm very jealous. I want to put life back in mine but.. I'm terrible with spray paint :( Definitely looks good though man, classic style.
:)
-
the roll on from durabak was pretty easy. and yea it looks like a whole new vehicle! im very proud
-
Looks like you did a nice job..... and it turned out pretty good for you... :-]
-
Any chance you can use a quality camera to take a few pics, close up of the texture and overall instead of a phone pic.
-
It looks abit lighter in the picture its a bit darker and once fully dry im hoping it will be the OD green durabak advertised
-
Anyone know where i can get the military star stencil. the only website i found wants $26 for shipping for a piece of plastic
-
If you have a local vinyl shop they could probably make you one. Just get it reversed, put on the sticker, paint the center, take the sticker back off.
-
I don't think a sticker will stick to that stuff...
same idea:
maybe a sign shop can make you a star from coroplast you can trace?
-
just draw a star on a pc of printer paper and go to a print shop and have them enlarge it to the size you want. just had a chey bow tie done for by buddy's shop door and its 3' tall and 5' long and it was $6
-
My 2 bits of experience.....
With That extreme of surface texture, you should have maybe "Reverse" painted the G.I. Star Logo,
(Painted a flat White "Field" first, then applied the Star "Mask", Then Painted the O.D. Green)
All is not lost.... make your "Mask",... use extra over spray protection, Shoot your Flat white from a good distance
from the "Mask" in several LIGHT COATS, MINUTES APART !! You will still get some "Fuzzy-ness", but it usually will
disappear n short time as the over spray around the "Mask" is a "Dry Paint" and will wash off.

That's roll on? How durable is it??
-

So far after it has cured it seems very durable. time will tell tho. I have used auto zone stuff for the bed with 2 coats (same with the durabak) and having a engine and trans in the bed only a few minor scratches
-
That looks really good, I mainly want to put it down instead of carpet. So did you sand down and put it on metal? did it need primer? sorry I'm Really curious about this now.
How much did you have left over after thee second(?) coat?

see when i looked at the instructions it said to just use the xylene and clean it off really good. remove any chipping paint. after i had finished i look online and it said to lightly sad and use primer for best result. I havent had any flaking or chipping. So i think its fine. when i did the bed i sanded it down and just painted it on. After 2 coats I have enough to do the interior.

Awesome! I'ma get me some of that soon :D I'll post pics too, thanks for posting

cant wait to see!

You may have mentioned this already but was this the textured Durabak or the smooth stuff. There are two versions and with the roller you were using it would tend to texture even the smooth version so Im curious. I'm asking because I want texture inside and smooth finish on the outside. I called the guys at Durabak and they said the smooth version could be spray painted without thinning....
Nice job, I like what you have going there!
Edit:"duh, very first sentence, "textured paint"... I think I read too many posts, thanks for your response....
-
yes its the textured stuff. It rolls on fairly easily, just make sure the roller is wet or it will start to pull the paint off. I had only cleaned the exterior with xylene. on their website it says for best results to lightly sand and use xylene. So far I havent had problems
-
just showing off my new paint job
-
Looks good. :)
