Title: Cut wheel wells for sidekick seat??
Post by: vuzuki on January 14, 2012, 06:49:58 PM
I'm really tired of only having two seats. 4 is really not enough for me but I can deal, but two.. >.<

Okay so I have a few theories for alternative seats because new And used they're like 80-500 bucks for a stock fricken seat and I can't really afford that.. least not for a while SO.

(I know guys get in trouble not for searching so I did search for a while, I've spent the last hour and a half searching so I thought it would be okay to post now D:)

First theory. Ford Explorers have 60/40 split rear seats, the right half of which is about the same dimensions of a samurai... similar enough to fit at least. And they hold themselves up when leaned back. So the good, they fit. The Bad is they're complicated, they're set up to fold kind of like a wall hugging rocking chair (the bottom goes back at the same time the back goes forward.. obviously) and the front is set up to drop down to lower mounts than the back, So they would need to be cut and stuff and wouldn't be foldable.

Second theory. Jeep CJs, less of a theory more of a where do I fricken find one???

Third theory, hardest but most universal. I looked under my samurai and noticed.. my tires really aren't using... aaalll of those big.. luxurious wheel wells... (Are they?? DD:). So I thoought, maaybe.. if I just cut them back to the.. closest possible point, I could get 1 or 2 inches on each side to accommodate maybe a sidekick rear seat, 39.5 inches?? I read a post Somewhere that said the sidekick rear was possible but he didn't say how.
So! I've been thinking for a while now, ideas Or even like.. Facts are very welcome.

I took my folding back seat out and put it in storage. When I do have the rare occasion to carry a passenger in the back I just use one of those folding stadium seats they sell at walmart for 15 bucks. It has a self supporting back, decently padded seat and I just strap it down to mounts already in place. Quick, light and easy. Best of all CHEAP. If you really want a back seat you can have mine. Just come and get it.

If this is for a Sammy why not just put a stock rear seat in?

Just find a used seat and spend $100 for it.  If you were close, I would hook you up.  What is your location?

Find a rear bench out of a Rhino or similar UTV. A lot of those guys took the stock seats out for aftermarket and they can be found for pretty cheap.

Ah, I missed the couldn't afford it part.  I think CJ seats will go for more then a Sammy one though.  Another option would be FJ-40's.  We swapped a Samurai seat into an FJ, so it should go the other way as well.

Yeah I haven't found a samurai backseat except from like petro works and suzuki john and they're at least 3 to 400$. I can get any seat I want at pick n pull for 50 bucks so if I can make it work......

DaddyDave that's a cool idea, but where do I look?? and I know there doesn't seem to be any near me >.<

If I can find a cj or fj... :P

Johnny and Bent I'm in fresno, ca. that close?

No, I'm in OK.

Why not try Trail Tough?  They just bought all of Hawk's inventory and they are running a sale on used parts.  Surely they would sell one for under $200.  Also, there were three different back seats.  A Split Deluxe, a Deluxe, and a Standard.  The Standard has a lot less padding than the others but is more compact when you fold it up as well.

No, they can wrap it in shrink wrap and UPS it to you.  Still a lot better idea than cutting up your wheel wells.  You could also try some local salvage yards.

Fj 40 rear seats ( at least all the ones I have owned) fold from the sides. there are two of them..YJ seats are prevalent and cheap.
Minni van rear bench seats are cheap and easily modified to fit . Take your tape measure to the wrecking yard...
Do not narrow the fender tubs!!!!!!!!!!!! What looks like tons of room disappears when the rig is in articulation mode.....
I have a leather 2nd seat from a Dodge minni van in the back of my Sammy Very cushy... The second seat is narrower than the third in a minni van. This allows access to the third seat...Perfect...Boxcar...Hope this helps...

Boxcar is right, don't cut to make a seat fit.  I would bolt in a couple bucket seats before I cut my wheel wells.

I was wondering about that :\
Been to two different yards, measured tons of van middle seats. Haven't found one yet under 40". And I haven't found any fj, cj, yj, etc.
Boxcar when you say modify, do you mean like narrow?

If you could find some low back buckets and modify the rails/mounts to bold solid to the floor I think you could make it work. Still a small bench would be better IMHO
