After much research I decided to go for the Yota carb over the CV and the Webber.
First because of the ease of install. Almost no mods to the Zuke.
Cost. $99 New from a vendor found on E Bay.....
Took 1 hour to do the entire conversion and we were off to the woods for a test drive.
Worked flawless .
Steep angles were no problem. Fires up effortlessly. Great torque out of the whole. Descent top end increase.
I gotta tell you. If your looking for a good swap for that pos Hitachi. Some times old school is best...

You will get better top end from the Weber, But big angles will be an issue.
The CV conversion works great, But at $400 . I don't See the advantage over the Yota.
The carb we used was the last version of the 2bbl used on the Corola 1200cc engine 1978 ish.
NO MODS REQUIRED to bolt in place of the Hitachi!!!!! And using the stock Zuke air box.
Had to convert the throttle cable to ball fitting , and fab a cable mount for the throttle and choke cable. That's it....Boxcar...

What did you do with all of the emission connections? Did you notice any improvement with gas mileage, and overall driving in town. Looks like a good swap, and easier than the others.
-
Removed everything ....Plugged unused vacuum ports.
5mpg increase.
Runs like a different rig....Much improved.....Boxcar...

Hey Boxcar,Do you still have the info on the guy who has the Corola carbs? Think thats the way I want to go,Seems like it will work great for what I want to do.

I just did this swap yesterday after reading the post last week. It seems to have more pep in its step but the olny problem I am having is the idle is way eratic. I cant find a vaccum leak, checked the timing. has anyone else had this problem? If so whad was the solution?

Probubly the base gasket...Boxcar...
-
Spray wd-40 around the base when running. If it smooths out that is it.
-
That's not exactly what I meant. The base gasket needs to be modified to fit the vacuum port on the new carb.
I think I have a gasket that was modified for the Yota carb laying an a bench at my shop.
I will take a picture of it and post it later....Boxcar...

Thought I would revive this thread as I took the advice of Boxcar and ordered the yota carb from the ebay seller mentioned above. Um, I think he sent the wrong carb. What I got is a Motorcraft 2 barrel progressive carb that will not even come close to mounting on the Samurai. The bolt pattern is larger and the venturi's are much larger. I ordered a 2 barrel carb for a '78 corrola with the 1200cc motor. I don't know what this carb fits but I am inclined to keep it as I may find some use down the line.
Boxcar, do you happen to have the part # of the carb you ordered from robbob36 from ebay? Thanks.
-
After doing a bit of research I found that the Ebay seller sent me a Holley R-6666-1 two barrel carb that fits mid 70's Ford and Mercury 2.8L V-6's. These carbs are listed for 2 1/2 times what I paid. Hmmmm.
I can't seem to find the corolla carb I wanted, anywhere. Looks like I'm back to square one. :(

Sorry I haven't been watching this site for a while. Not enough time in the day. I'll look up the # for ya tomarow....Boxcar...
PS: Call the seller , He posts his # and sends it with the carb. He will make it good as long as you ordered the correct carb...
-
Aisan carb #21100-24010 or #21100-24020. They are getting hard to find. I'm glad I bought a few of them...
I will look for a newvendorr and post what I find...Boxcar...
PS: This site lists the carb in stock. I have no exp. whith this vendor....

Ive done this swap worked great. You can also use a toyota Starlet carb.Just a little bigger than the corolla carb. But also works good.

Well, after more research into this carb, I found out it is a Holley 5200 series. This carb, it turns out, is a popular upgrade for the Mazda B2000/2200 and the Datsun 1200 motor. The Holley 5200 is a licensed Holley clone of a Weber 32/36 built for Ford for the mid to late '70's Mustang II, Ranger and other models. Hmmmm, I thought. So I bought a Weber adapter plate for the Samurai and it fit! I then made a throttle cable mounting plate, found a 3/16" hose barb fitting that fit into the fuel intake port on the carb (it normally takes a screw in filter but the fuel fitting was too big), plugged a bunch of vacuum lines and fired it up. It runs great! :) I haven't taken it out on the road, yet, because I haven't got an air cleaner on it. I think the air cleaner box for a Weber 32/36 should fit nearly perfect.
The engine ran a little rough at idle with the distributor vacuum advance plugged into manifold vacuum so I changed it to ported vacuum and it idles much smoother. Once I get the air filter assembly, I will road test it and work out any kinks. My initial feeling is that you can add this carb to the list of alternative carbs to upgrade the Samurai.
Seems like I scored pretty well with this "Ebay mistake".
