Title: hi, im new, but here is my turbo tracker.
Post by: redboardergbc on April 19, 2004, 02:10:25 PM
I posted in the "beginning of the end" link. but I think it might have gotten mixed up. so I started this post. I was having trouble getting the pix to this site but I did get them over to http://www.kielbassa.com/pload/index.php just go to that site and click browse. the pics of my turbo trackick are labeled p4190024 - 38. if someone knows how to post them here,i would greatly appreciate it. I see alot of power/turbo posts, and thought I should post mine. let me know what you think. thanks

it is a ihi rhb5 turbo, custom made header. intercooler off of a saab 900t. 2.25 mandrel bends, monza blow off valve, k&n filter. it is a 2.5in exaust turbo back through a high flow cat. split into dual 2in at the flowmaster muffler.

thanks again. it has a calmini 3in body lift, 3in suspension is next with 32x11.50 tires.I had the interior basically finished and then it was broken into.have picks of custom sub enclosure, rear speaker panels, and lockable amp box. sadly the pictures were taken after the subs were stolen but the enclosure is still there. I also had boost and air/fuel gauges, but were stolen along with the custom gauge pod on the windshield pillar. but it was coming along, now just have to build it back up again.if you want to see these pics let me know and ill try to post them.

Keep up the good work bud.

I like the duel exhaust.  ;D

thanks, the dual exaust is mainly for appearance but it does its job as well.

;D In Chunks words "Now that's what I'm talkin about"
16V turbo setup, that's the next build I'm doing to mine  ;D

I almost went for the intercooler on the top of the engine
like that, but went for the traditional mounting location.

A word to redboardergbc, Sleeper, you won't get broken into
as much without all the advertising.

SO what boost do you run??? and how have you handled the
extra fuel needed for the increased airflow ???

Did you build the motor for the turbo ??? or did you add it to
the stock motor ???

Wow, I feel so useful :)

What are the HP/Tq numbers on that thing? If you've had it dyno'd, post the chart! ;D

im pushing 7psi, am somewhere around 185hp i think. it is on a stock engine for now. am adding an apexi-safc piggy back fuel computer and a msd boost/timing retard. will have it dynoed after the afc is installed.then I will bump it up to 10 or 12psi and swap the injectors. but my injectors should be good for about 9psi.and ill try to get some forged pistons if needed.but it may not be necessary.the stock fuel pump is the same used on the v6 vitaras so will be able to keep my fuel under pressure up into the 200s.then they can tune my fuel computer while its on the dyno and get it primed up.but as is,it never runs lean but runs rich on hard acceleration due to the over correction from the maf and computer.but no pinging ever. runs really great.use 91 octane fuel and full synthetic oil.the simplicity of the install really came from the maf.

wild may understand this, but is it wrong that my new favorite gear is 5th.not many people with trackers can understand the feeling of going 80mph in the mountains, uphill not down.full boost is there by 3300rpm so power really isn't an issue anymore.and the looks from other drivers are amusing when they hear the turbo spool and the b.o.v. hit as I fly pass there v6 engines.

That's nice to know that a MAF system adapts so
well to the increased flow.

10-12 PSI might be a bit too much for the stock
CR pistons, you might have to use LC forged at
about 7:1 CR to get the most from the turbo at
higher boost pressures.

There comes a point at which no matter how much
fuel you supply the engine will ping, stock CR of
8.9:1 at 10 PSI will ping, but you have to remember
boost and flow are two different things, higher boost
will not give more power by it's self, you need more flow
to get there too.

The IHI turbo you have is probably good for 9 PSI, much
more than that and it will just start running out of flow.

I pulled the waste gate line off to see how much more
I could get, not any more boost and ping city, I was really
disappointed with the result.

What size engine did your turbo come from ???
I matched the turbo from a 1.6L Mazda MX3 for
my swap/install, I didn't want to loose low end
from too big a unit.

Yep, now that's what I'm talkin about
;D

I don't run a BOV, I got an Auto Trans, keeps the boost up   ;)

i had to run a bov cause I have a manual, and during shifts it would backspin the turbo with the pressure surge. my turbo spec is used for the 1.6 to 2.5l engines, but is an aftermarket upgrade, not a factory turbo. usually for the old subaru impreza or ford probe gt.

does anybody know where I can find some forged pistons, without having them made custom.

Ahh, yes I know there are a bunch of "pinwheel"
combos, that can totaly change the range of
what the turbo can do, the Probe was a 2.2L
I think, I'm looking at a 1.8L Subaru unit to
replace the one I blew the bearing out of in Moab.

:( No, not yet anyway, I have found them for about $400
for a set of custom made ones tho.

I need to get a piston catalog to look at the specs and cross
reference to another unit that is not a custom made one.

Title: Re: hi, im new, but here is my turbo tracker.

I don't know any more, I did all the research
over 2 years ago when I first did the turbo swap.
$400 bucks was out of the price range for me so
I just did it witht he stock pistons.

One alternative would be to mill the top of the
factory pistons to reduce the CR, but this also could
cause a weaker piston, so I would mill carefully

I plan to do another turbo for myself again, with
longer stroke and bigger bore, so I will go the custom
piston route then, also piston oil squirters to keep them
cooler too, fun stuff this turbo stuff is  ;D

instead of milling the pistons. just add another head gasket or swap the stock one for a thicker one.ive heard that this is a common solution for compression while under boost.it makes sense.
Title: Re: hi, im new, but here is my turbo tracker.
Post by: redboardergbc on April 19, 2004, 05:37:55 PM
and yes it is extremely fun stuff.
Title: Re: hi, im new, but here is my turbo tracker.
Post by: wildgoody on April 19, 2004, 05:45:21 PM
Hmm, thicker Head Gasket, ya that would work.
I forgot about that, lots of drag racers use copper
head gaskets to hold the blown nitro fuel motors
together, since the stock gasket will blow from the
extreem high pressures involved.

Thanks for the heads up (no pun intended)  ;D
Also they "O Ring" the block to apply additional
pressure to the gasket and further ensure a positive
seal of the gasket
