Title: Zuk Mods?
Post by: zukalaska on April 12, 2004, 04:18:39 PM
I bought an '86 sammi last spring for 400 bucks. Good mechanical shape but a total piece of crap as far as body goes. All fenders were rusted through. Big time rusted through like four inches off the floor gone. Anyways I have been taking it mudding it is completely stock where should I start??? I know it needs some engine work. I think I am going to rebuild it this summer. It won't go faster than 55 mph downhill in 5th gear. Which sounds like maybe the last guy dropped some low gears in her but I'm not sure.  ::)

So here's the question. Where should I start. Anyway to get some quick horsepower out of it. As it sits now there is barely anypower left. All help would be appreciated thanks alot, Jess

I'll probably be doing more trail riding than anything lots of mud the occasional log in the road. That kind of stuff should I still mess with the gearing? Jess ???

Well, if you are looking for quick engine mods for power, I can help.
First, start with the exhaust, go with a header, 2" exhaust, a Weber carb properly setup for a 1.3, an adjustable fuel pressure regulator set to 2 psi, turn the carb around backwards, and put a hotter coil in it.
That would be a great start. ;D

Oh yeah,
And as fars as the body goes...Should I rip the whole thing apart or try to salvage what I have left with bondo. Its a piece of crap body anyways so I figure It can't get much worse with bondo. I wish somebody made a one piece fiberglass body kit for it. One suitable for 4x4 anyways. Thanks, Jess  ;D

At one point in time, Rocky Road was looking into doing a fiberglass tub.  I send Glen an email every now and then reminding him that there is interest......if everyone does this, they may actually get to it.

I started to gut today got the dash out and one seat. The dash seemed to be caught on something but the sawzall took care of that. I am running it in summer only should I take all of the heating elements out of it? Jess

I'm seriously considering it! Shouldn't be too hard ::) ;D
e-mail me and I'll share some ideas! I haven't dug into it yet, so I'd like to see pics of your as it sets (w/ dash out please) if you can. That way it'll give me an idea of what I'm up against.

I hear petroworks makes one, but I've never checked. Too cheap to buy one! ;D

Best mods?  SOA with OTT steering and the xfer case re-gear.   That followed closely by a locker.  I've got all that and more in my Zuk, and I can go just about anywhere with it.

BTW, my Zuk does 57mph wide open held in 4th gear on the flats, so don't feel too bad...Zuk's aren't know for their top end..... ::)
