Title: 1995 Geo Tracker 4x4 5spd not pulling in 4wd?
Post by: bigal87 on March 23, 2012, 11:10:17 AM
Hi everyone I just got a 95 Geo Tracker 4x4 5spd with 65,000 on it about to do a timing belt replacement. When i bought it i thought the 4wd was working but after trying to go up a hill it appears that the front is not pulling at all. I lifted it up on a lift and put it in 4wd low and locked the hubs and the passenger side cv turns but not the front wheels. Anyone have a idea what might be going on?

Thanks Al

The lockout hub probably needs to be taken off, taken apart, cleaned up, relubed, reassembled and reinstalled.  Pretty common for them to get rusty/sticky on the inside and not want to work.  Might as well pull the other hub off and apart too and clean it, so you don't have problems with it.
The hubs have to be put together properly, or they won't work.  So I suggest only taking one apart at a time.  That way you can use the other one for reference on how it goes back together, if you forget.

Thanks Skyhiranger

I will take apart the hubs and clean and inspect make sure they are not broke.

Soaking them in a light oil helps, such as power steering fluid or ATF.  I just had to do this to the auto hub on my tow rig as it was hanging up.

Thanks for the advice Drone637

I just took them off cleaned them really good they were really rusty, and greased them. Now they are working great.

Only problem i have now is that i broke one of the bolts that hold the hub on. Does anyone know where i might be able to find one?

Your local Suzuki dealership should be able to order them, or just give Trail Tough a call.

Last time I checked, the bolts were like $5 each and the cone washers were like $8 each, from the dealer.  Your best bet is finding a used one.  Or you could probably go to the hardware store and buy a bolt that is the right size and grade.

I doubt you will find the proper bolt at a hardware store, maybe a auto-zone or NAPA. BUT what I would do is look in the yellow pages for a fastner distributor in your area. I found one a little over an hour away and they carry everything you would ever need as far as metric hardware goes, every grade, SS and nickle coated hardware, flanged bolts, studs, safety wire drilled grade8 bolts, even hard to find BSPT fittings and adaptors. I make a trip every now and then and sorta stock up while browsing the aisles like a kid in a candy store,,,Love that SS and nickle coated stuff!

Ace Hardware usually has a pretty good Metric selection.  One of the last chain stores that carries a decent bolt selection.
