Has anyone come across this company that makes a mod that enables the electronic 4 speed to be manually shifted without a TCM? www.radesignsproducts.com (http://www.radesignsproducts.com)
The site mentions the product is aimed towards the AW4/ A340 family of AT(found in Toyotas) . The 4speed in the trackick is considered to be in the same family made by Aisin Warner. This company sponsors the rig featured in this build which started out has a '94 track and runs a 4 speed. www.bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/topic,96467.165.html (http://www.bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/topic,96467.165.html)

Your links are not working. forgot the www.
There are several trnasmission controllers out there that will work with ANY current e-controlled transmissions, one that I have used incorporates a paddleshift mounted to the steering wheel but are costly.
The controllers you linked to are far cheaper, and as far as I am concerned just as viable. Basically you have a auto clutch manual trans. Exactly what I would desire for the trail!
Just remember that OBDII cars will toss out a code, a better option for them would be to put the 4spd auto into a 5spd truck and then no codes and no need for the TCM.

My bad ,thx Talonxracer! I started my day off laying on my sixty year old back on an muddy, rocky oil field road in BFE somewhere in ND trying to reinstall a driveshaft a truck driver tried to put thru the floor of his KW! Later on I will hear the gossip "that old man is slower than a turtle with a broken leg" I should have proofed my post! I went to the forum on my coffee break to regain my composure,OMMM !!!They have been using paddle shifters in high $ offroad rigs for years but its my understanding these r specific to certain models of AT.www.mastershift.com (http://www.mastershift.com) I found the Zuwharrie post a week after I scored a non electronic 4 speed AT from a Volvo to try and do that mod. The radesign website mentions the possibility of CELwarnings.
Thanx,
Pete

Or he could put the equivalent manual ECU in his auto.

My original goal was to replace the TH180C (3speed) with a 4speed in a 2DR '95 Track w/o doing the wiring mods,ECU swaps etc. I had already scored the AW03-72LE from a seller who didn't have the ECU, wiring etc. but for $150(plus xcase) I thought it was worth it. I didn't come up with this mod, it has been done by several people on Zuwharrie, I could post the links if people r interested. The Volvo swap basically envolves using the Zuki bellhousing, the Volvo center section,TC and the Zuki output section depending on which xcase was used. These mods were done mainly by Sammy owners using a 1.6 from a Trackick. As an example, one poster ran his AT into Dana 300 xcase ! So when I found the link to the radesign website I thought that this was easier and achieved the same result, even though I had already scored a Volvo AT w/o TC lockup. Most of these mod posts are several years old and there is little feedback about longevity etc.
Thanx,
Pete

This is a great idea, and I'd like to see more about it. Details on the aftermarket parts for the trans etc. A manually shifted "auto " 4 speed with overdrive would be the hot setup for me.
-
dont forget the additional 4.5" of length from the 4spd will require new driveshafts.

The originator of this idea seems to be this poster who IMHO did some amazing mods, but for whatever reason never installed his finished product: http://www.bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/topic,60994.30.html (http://www.bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/topic,60994.30.html) This poster did his AT mods for a 1.6 swap into a Sammy: http://bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/topic,113332.0.html (http://bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/topic,113332.0.html) This poster came up with an additional source(from Montero/Raider) to transplant into his '96 trackick: http://www.bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/topic,113393.0.html. (http://www.bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/topic,113393.0.html.) He is the poster who uses a Dana 300 xcase! This poster performed a swap also into a Sammy excellent read: http://www.bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/topic,76924.0.html (http://www.bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/topic,76924.0.html) He used a Volvo with a lockup TC.
This poster also used a Volvo: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=716069&highlight=volvo+aw71 (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=716069&highlight=volvo+aw71)
I found this AT parts supplier after I scored the two trannys www.wittrans.com (http://www.wittrans.com), The trouble with some AT parts suppliers is they only deal with their rebuilders, don't have online stores and treat shadetree mechanics like they have a disease, not this place. Although I haven't ordered from them yet, they sell the bellhousing for the 03-72LE.

Its the same family but the electronics is different.

I am glad you saw this post Rhinoman, you're the resident electronics expert. Did you go to the radesign website? I know he didn't devulge how it was done but do you think you could design a similar system? After searching different AT parts websites I believe the different models in this AW4 family share the same hard parts but with different flexplates ,output shafts and Torque Converters. Basically the same center section, I didn't look at the Electrics.

i was wonering the same thing ,i found a 4spd auto, i have a 3spd auto .so i can just swap them? i guess i should say i have a 92 sidekick. use a manual ecm and shift manually. or do you need electric stuff.

You can not just swap the trans and go, you will need new driveshafts for the front and rear because the 4spd trans is 4.5" longer, and it will need the electronics because the 4spd from the 4dr Track/Kicks is electronically shifted. That is why the Volvo trans is an option as it is the same 4spd basically but with manual shift control.
-
If the trans is longer does the support crossmember have to be moved too? this is starting to sound like it's more trouble than it's worth.

I found this website on which you can research transmission by type or make and model:
www.Roadkillcustoms.com (http://www.Roadkillcustoms.com). Look down Home page for transmission database
When I put in 03-72L which is the 4-speed AT w/o electronics but with lockup torque converter it came up with:
Izuzu:
Amigo 2.6, L6, '92-'95
Impulse 2.0,2.3,L4, '88-'89
Impulse 2.0 L4/ Turbo, '86-87
PU 3.6, V6 '88-'95 (some of these came in 4x4)

A couple of people have looked into this, there is a good thread on auszookers.com and there was also another thread on Suzuki-forums.com. Autos are very rare over here and I've never played with one but I have the software and schematics for the TCM so I may be able to help.
