I was wondering if any of you cool cats out there can tell me how easy or hard it is to hook extra gauges to the dash board of my Sidekick (1991 2 door AT 8V engine)? I was at a store today and I was really thinking of get a Tachometer (my stock dash doesn't have one. :( ) and ever since my alternator went out, (which was why I joined this forum in the first place) I want to hook up a Voltmeter also.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Adding gagues is not difficult. Just pick some that will not clutter the dash to much. They come with wireing diagrams that tell you how to hook them up. I've been looking at some mini triple gagues that flush mounts to the dash. The hardest part is running the wires to hook everything up, and thats not to bad. Most street rod shops will have a catalogue with a huge selection that you can choose from.

I've had my eye on these:
I'd like to put in a voltmeter and oil pressure guage on mine.

They mount either on the side of the windshield or above it and come in several different configurations, and most of the them are less than $40 at Summit or Jegs.

^^^ Those look nice!
Since my ashtray is missing in my Tracker I have thought about making a plate with a couple of gauges in there to fill it out. Shouldnt be too hard with black plastic and a couple of small autometer gauges. Course if someone wanted to make it more they could angle them and use fiberglass to give them a custom rounded look.

I took the clock out of my dash in my samurai and put a Tach in place of it. It fit perfect to....

Can that be done? Is it that simple? There is no extra wiring involved? And what about the Odometer?
Thanks for the info guys, this is great! :)

I know it's that simple for the Samurai and I believe it is the same for the Sidekick. To make sure, check the factory service manual and get similar years. As for the odometer, get the lowest one you can! :)
Good luck, -Eric

ya mine has the stock tach and thats all it needs. i do want put a volt meter and an hour meter on it too. lata stu

My 90 kick didn't have a tach either... I went to a junkyard and looked at a tach from a 92, and took out the cluster with tach on my 89, and neither of them were going to work... I don't think that's the best method. Apparently the wiring is done differently and it is NOT that easy, but I could be wrong... The connectors were definitely different on mine, anyhow...
I ended up buying one off of JCWhitney for $29 and installed in on the steering column. It's backlit, works great, and looks very nice. I would have probably paid $30 for the factory cluster anyway.

I want the oil pressure gauge and voltmeter. They would just be good things to have. Oil pressure could also show possible future problems that are coming.
I really want a digital gas gauge. Just more accuracy. I can never tell that last 2 gallons. If its hot/cold or elevation it all makes the gauge go a little differently.
Could really save when going in places where gas costs so much! Like alturus and those lonely calofornia towns. MTBE raises the price so much. But BTW where do you get those frames that hold gas cans to the back doors? I saw a car with that. I would like an extra 12 gallons handy... two 6 gallon cans.

Thanks for the update. I wasn't for sure and I'm glad some that had actually tried it shared their information with us. Do you think the same year of vehicle would work? Once again, Thank you...

I'm going to see if I can find out if a same year cluster would work. All depends on how much local yards are charging for these things.

I won a cluster from a 1991 Sidekick with tach on Ebay! It's not to far from where I live so I'm going to meet with the seller tomorrow and pick it up. After cleaning it up and seeing if I can roll the odometer to match my current mileage, I'm going to see if it'll work on my Sidekick.

If you're worried about the odo, take out you're old speedo unit and put it in place of the speedo in the new cluster.
-
Rolling back an odometer is a bitch. >:( Anyhow, I'm going to try out the new cluster tomorrow.

i cracked the case of mine once and tryed rolling back the numbers for fun and never could do it.  drove me crazy.  i finaly thew it away.
UPDATE: i did install a hourmeter to see how many hours i will run this summer.
