Over the weekend I put a new timing belt, water pump & Crank/Cam seals in my 90 tracker. got everything back together and drove around over the weekend. When driving to work Monday morning I was doing about 60 and it just died and won't start back up, Just cranks over. Had it towed home, when I got home I tired to start and it started for a few seconds and dies again. I did notice that when I turned the key on my oil light was on and was beeping. but its full of oil. any thoughts on what could cause it to not start?
engine is 1.6 - 8v
-
Try to start it with test gas.. let us know.
-
Does it have spark?
-
check the ground wire on the disturber shaft
-
Without the engine running the light will be on it does not measure quantity of oil in the engine, but the oil pressure once the engine is running.
are you getting fuel, spark?
-
Thanks for your responses, I will check for spark & fuel tomorrow and let ya'll know what I find.

OK I did a little bit of testing, I checked the Coil getting spark there, Pulled one of the plugs and getting spart there. tested with some propane in the Air Cleaner, and it tried to kick over, So I think I can rule out any ignition issues as they seem to good. So It must me a Fuel Issue, I checked the main fuel line to the TB and got no gas out of it when I cranked it over. So what do I need to test next? from some of the posts I have read, it could be one of 4 things if it is fuel related the Relay, fuel filter, fuel pump, or the ECM.

What I did;
Unplugged the fuel pump over the gas tank and applied 12v straight to the pump..no go. Replaced pump and filter..go.

You mentioned the oil light coming on with key on, which is normal until it starts, but does your CEL light come on as well? It should, & if not your ECU is not working. (Unless the bulb is burned out or missing.)
On the '89/'90 the spark is stand alone, it doesn't use the ECU to make spark. If the caps in the ECU have never been replaced I would suspect that is the culprit.
Also, check the ground & connector behind the left tail light. Both are known trouble spots. The ground is on the inner fender & should have 2 black wires to it: fuel pump & level sender. The connector is in the harness just a bit forward of this.

I test the pump with direct 12v, heard it humming, cracked filter line on exit & tested again, Fuel was flowing out filter. Cracked the main TB line and test again. got fuel up to the TB. So I think I rule out Fuel Pump & Filter.

CEL Does not come on that I can tell. Will have to check the bulb on that. I done ever remember seeing it come on though now that I think about it even when it was running. I will check the ground behind the tail lights and report back.

I check the CEL and the bulb was missing, replaced with the seat belt light and the CEL comes on when cranking.
I just removed the tail light and there is only one ground wire on the inner fender. removed it cleaned and put back in.
What should I check now?

pull the ecm apart n check the caps

Just pulled the ECM, removed cover and the large Cap in the corner has burnt up and and burnt the circuit board as well I only had to desolder on side and it fell out. tired to cleaned the board up with a toothbrush, and alot of the copper on the board is exposed & the one side to the Cap has completely burned the board all the way over to the other pin.

does this sound like something that can be fixed with a new Cap or should I just get another ECM?
-
It looks like the board is ate up a fair bit, I think you would be better off with a new one with upgraded caps.

It's hard to tell in the pics, but if the traces are bad it is sometimes possible to repair them. There is a guy on ebay with a good rep. You could send it to him & see what he says if it's not something you can tackle yourself. If it's not repairable he will say so. If it is, he's not too expensive. There are some guys on the boards that do ECU repairs as well. Member redidbull on here & the Zu might be able to help.
If you do replace it, make sure you get the exact matching number... & make sure it has new caps or you'll just end up with the same problem.
Here's the ebay guy:

Thanks for all the help guys. I ended up finding a suzuki salvage yard in WI, they had a referbed ECM which was delivered yesterday, Installed it last night and it fired right up.

Cool, good to hear you're up & running! ;D
-
check the ground wire on the disturber shaft
this guy knows his trackers haha had that happen 3 times
