Title: 4.16 transfer case noise
Post by: randy mohawk on April 05, 2012, 06:51:15 PM
Hi I'm new to this site ,so please bear with me. I have 87 Sammy with a good rebuilt motor and I upgraded the transfer case to go with the 31"baja claws. The 4.16 transfer case with 2low split-H from Rocky Road  works great but when in two wheel drive and cruising at 45 to 50 mph it makes a strange noise that sounds  like the the four wheel gears and front shaft are still turning. what can this be?

Let me ask you this. When I jack up the car off all 4 wheels and put in gear all 4 wheels turn just fine in 4x4 mode both high and low . but when I stop and shift into 2 wheel drive ,and unlock hubs  the front wheels still  catch slightly and want to turn though not that strong .I could stop them from turning by holding by hand . could this be the original hubs are finished and my need to be replaced?

If you are getting drag on the front end with hubs disengaged and in 2wd, then I would look at the TC.

Or pull the front drive line to isolate the problem.
