Title: Need welding advice!
Post by: Trentski on April 16, 2004, 11:38:16 PM
Need help to replace some missing sheet metal in the bed of my project sammy - the former owner was cutting her up to install a fuel cell and hydraulics:

Question - do I need an arc welder or a mig/tig. I know nothing about welding but have a friend who can and I need to know what type of welder to rent for the day I invite him over for beer, BBQ, and welding...

It's only the sheet metal that's cut and a few brackets (gas tank) nothing over 1/8"...

Thanks Guys..

your going to want to use a mig welder for this type of work. use .023 70s-6 hard wire with a 75% argon 25% co2 blend. an arc welder would be too harsh for sheet metal, you'd end up burning holes.

A hole like that I'd use a mig welder. :o  The Lincoln welder at Home Depot is a great deal for the doit yourselfer. You can buy that and weld anything you want on that Zuk. You'll have to get the argonC02 mix gas cylinder at a local welding supply shop though.

Thanks guys, I can rent a Mig welder for 40 bucks for the day from the local rental place.  I'll post the 'after' pics once the smoke clears.

Hey NY - that's a kickin kick. I think the dud(e) who had mine prior was going the other direction - thinking bling bling low riding pimpmobile..  he had started to chromify everything in sight and had chrome bumpers and nerfs he wanted to sell me when I picked it up.

of course a mig welder would be best, but an econemy way of fixing the sheetmetal holes:

If you can get your replacment parts to fit well overlaping you couls use a pop rivets and undercoating or roofing tar to seal it up from the elements. um er Mud  ;D
