Title: throttle body spacers
Post by: Flatlander on May 09, 2012, 04:39:52 PM
Anybody entertain the idea or try a throttle body spacer on a stock engine for better performance?  Is this even possible on these engines?

I would think that it would make alittle power. My understanding is that the manifold is a poor design.

well im running 33's and on the highway if it helps out, i could use it.  And no, i havent changed gears sets yet, but i am looking into it.  Thanks for the help.

what geas do you have now and what mods have you done to the motor?

Completely stock, but do have a K & N filter kit and a 2 1/4 inch exhaust with flow master muffler.  Stock gears (5.13's),

UNI clamped right on the intake snorkle woke up my 8v. Much better low end, places where I would have had to stop and shift to low range can be negotiated in 1 hi now. Nice.

That is to be expected, you decreased intake resistance. The UNI filter on the intake is a completely different animal from a TB spacer.

To the TS,,, what engine are we talking about, 1.3carb, FI, 1.6 8V/16V???? the spacer would have different results with each application.

I am aware of that, the poster mentioned better performance, that caught my eye.

I have kicked this around for years. I don't know anyone running one.. I dropped the idea when I put the v6 in.. But I do have 8v in the race truck... Could be a good R&D project.

HUTCH:  If you do try it, please let me know if there is a noticable difference. Id appreciate it.

What is great about a spacer is that you can fabricate them rather easily and cheaply. I take a gasket to my buddy who owns a CNC shop and he pops out a few in different thicknesses of Delrin in a few minutes. Then I give the spacers a try, adding-subtracting thickness of spacers to see what is felt by the butt dyno.

I'll take a 1".

OK    so before i try to make one, i wanna make sure i understand this.  The spacer goes between the plenum and the throttle body,  or between the throttle body and the manifold?  ANYONE?

The plenum is a part of the manifold, the area where the airmass is a single volume prior to entering the individual runners after exiting the TB, so the spacer would be placed between the TB and the manifold.

Basically you are enlarging the plenums area, this helps low rpm responsivness and as you go to WOT.

I just read Zaggys post from 5 years ago. They gained power and fuel economy with one. 2" is the optimal size.

I am working on lifting my air intake above my TB to make the air intake hose line back up after the body lift. I will let you know Free two tanks of gas if it make a diffrence on fuel economy.
