Title: 1997 GEO transmission

Hi All
 I have a friend looking for a 1997 GEO Tracker 5 speed transmission for me. He sent me these pictures and I was wondering if any of you can tell if its a tranny for my car. If not then what pictures does he need to take? Im looking for something that I can rebuild on my own (my first project) Does this one, if it is for my car, look like it would do??????

Looks like a 2wd transmission.  If you need a 4wd then you will need to modify the output shaft or swap it with your existing transmission.  No idea if it has the lower 5th gear though.

That sure does look like a 5spd trans and 4wd transfercase, you can see the front output is discolored from leaking gear oil, that wouldnt be present if it was the 2wd TC variant.

I cant tell from the pics what year it is for, the spline count on the output shafts changed in 96' to a courser spline count. Cant remember off the top of my head what the spline count actualy are, someone will quip in

Looks like 4wd to me also.  2wd shifter box has about eight bolts holding it down, and of course doesn't have the forward output shaft.

You have been working too hard Kris, time for a day off.  You usually catch those details.

If yours is a 4wd it has to have a 16 spline output shaft to fit your year. In 95 they switched the output. If it's an earlier yr find a driveshaft yolk ( 26 spline ? I think ) and use that on your driveshaft. The fronts are all 26 spline.

From what I can see in the pics, the tcase output shaft is a 26 spline (96 and up tcases have 16 spline rear output shafts and have a green coating on them).  The tranny is still useable, simply use you existing tcase on this tranny.  The trannys are the same, as far as the tcases bolting up to them (any 89-98 tcase will bolt up to any 89-98 tranny).

As was mentioned, there were 2 different 5th gear ratios available in trackicks.  From what I have been able to determine, if the tranny originally came behind a 16V engine, then it will have a .795 ratio; if it came behind an 8V engine, then it will have a .86 ratio.  The only way to know for sure what ratio that tranny has is to put the tranny in 5th gear and see how far the input shaft turns (it will be either .795 or .86 of a revolution) in 1 revolution of the output shaft.  You can check it with the tcase still on the tranny, just make sure the tcase is in high range (1:1 tcase high range ratio).
