Title: Looking to buy this XL-7. Have questions
Post by: 99Trackerconv on May 20, 2012, 06:27:38 PM
Its a 01 XL with a 5spd manual/4x4 combo....has third row too. 156k miles on it

They have it priced for $2900 on the sign but when I called I'm pretty sure he said $2500

Is this a good price? It doesn't seem to have any rust or dents, the paint is a little faded on the door piller but not bad.

This would be a second vehicle to drive untill I find a good V8 swap then it will be a play toy.

Mine's 2002, and it has 149k miles on it.  RUns like new!  The oil color is dark tan at every oil changes.  If that one does the same then, sure its a good deal.

Yeah, I'll have to check that stuff out, What else is there to check out while  I test drive it?

I think if I can  take it out for a little while I'll get it checked out at a mechanic in town.

The rack and pinion bushings.  Its easily replaced.  But ive seen couple that's basically worn out.  Mine hasnt gotten to that point yet.

And brake pads.  if it squeals or whistle..... replace them with wagner pads and get the rotor turned.

The motor itself is solid.  I keep up with the maintence on the motor.

A history of maintenance records (particularly oil changes) would be nice.   Start it while cold and listen to how much rattle you hear from the front of the engine.  Pull the dip stick and see what color it is.  Look into the oil cap and again check on the oil color and look for any excessive crud build up indicating infrequent oil changes.  Ask what type oil is used during the oil changes.  Reason this is important is the $1500 to $1700 dollar cost of replacing the chain, tensioners and head work that will be required IF the engine wasn't properly maintained.  Great little engines when properly maintained.  Expensive when not maintained.

Put it in 4WD and ensure the pump and actuator diaphragm are operational.  Check for the smooth engagement of the clutch.  If it is difficult to slide into gear you might have a clutch replacement expense looming as well.  And of course visually inspect the frame area for rust.  I've found a few with really clean bodies... but the frames pending failure.

Well of course I took too long again, can't ever seem to get time to test drive or go to the bank. Went past it last night on the way home from work, it was there. Went past it today, gone. Seen it out the rode at a gas station clean and no For Sale signs. I will call tomarrow on the chance they took it out to clean it and get new signs but I really doubt it.
