Title: New to forum with new project
Post by: dasher on June 23, 2012, 02:19:06 PM
Just wanted to say hi to everyone and that I am new to the forum.  I have got a 2000 Suzuki Grand Vitara with about 80,000 miles on it but the wife wrecked it, So I have found a 2001 Suzuki Grand Vitara with a perfect body but a blown engine, so I will be doing an engine swap and although I have found a wealth of info on here I'm sure I will have some questions.

First should I do anything to the good engine while I have it out of the car, like valve cover gaskets, oil pan gasket, etc

Also I was wanting to know what everyones input is on th Rock Auto parts brands BECK/ARNLEY or DNJ ENGINE COMPONENTS.
Or if not Rock Auto who has the best price for parts.

Any advice, tips, info would be greatly appreciated......

Having both vehicles will make the swap much easier.  Hang on to everything until you are done.  The parts left over are valuable and can be used for help, trades, or just given (in some states it is illegal to sell parts w/o lisence).
I would change the timing chains & water pump while motor is out.
I would also try to find a hard copy of the Factory Service Manual for your new vehicle.  ACK's http://www.acksfaq.com/ (http://www.acksfaq.com/)is a good resource for information.
This may be a plug & play swap, or the wiring may have changed, requiring adapting from one wiring system to another or changing out whole system.  The best thing to do is compare FSM wiring diagrams for both years.  Or compare wiring color pin for pin on the connector's before you connect them.  My experience is that the computers are not as delicate as the manuals portray them, but disconnect battery before breaking into wiring.
I hope you have a garage to work in.

Create a build page, take lots of photo's and let us know how it is going.   WELCOME!!!

If its a 5spd, may as well change the clutch while you have it apart...

I use Rock Auto a lot, usually has everything I need, I use Beck/Arnley parts  a lot, seem as good as or better than most.
