I just picked up a brand new Smittybilt x20 8. It's a step up from the XRC 8. The only difference I can tell is that it is completely water proof. It is brand new and hasn't been used, and I only paid $300. It runs about $500 new I believe. The only problem I have, is that it is pretty heavy, and seems big. I don't want it took look to over kill on my Zuk. your thoughts? Here are some pics of my Sammi.

8K is pretty much the standard rating for a Samurai.
You don't want the danged thing to break when you REALLY need it...

Yea, that's what I have been told. What are your thoughts about a removable hitch style mount vs fixed? That way I can hook up in front and back.
-
That seems to be a convenient setup!
However, picking up an 8k Winch mght be similar to cleaning up after Futurama's Nibbler when he makes poo...
That part would get old quickly - especially if you are over 26.

Warn makes a part called the Multi-Mount (http://www.warn.com/truck/mounting-systems/multi_mount.shtml), which allows you to do that. It's a pretty convenient little setup.

years ago I had and 84 toyota and winched out backward by running the cable under the axles and out the back....it worked.

I run an 8k on mine, wouldn't run anything smaller.
Multimounts are fine for an occasional winch or multiple vehicles, but they stick out too far and are weak in a side load imho. I've seen mounts with 2 recievers on them, those would be better.
Running your winch underneath would work in a pinch, but if your stuck in mud it wouldn't be very fun getting it through there. Also terrible on your cable making that sharp of a bend at the fairlead.

I have (2) xrc8's. One on the trailer (for picking up blown up Trackers) and one on my Tracker. The one on my Tracker has rope line instead of wire line. I can carry the winch in one hand. All 8k winches are heavy. I wouldn't go any smaller unless you are only going to use the winch on asphalt. The waterproof winches may be heavier, I haven't checked....
Mount it tight to the body and you'll be fine..............
