Title: Winch lubricant and cable care
Post by: serv on June 30, 2012, 06:21:19 AM
Need some suggestions on what lubricant is best suited for my winch.  I am using a Landcruiser 100 series winch for my samurai.  I am not sure what brand it is since it has no markings other than the Toyota Landcruiser markings.

The cable is practically new when I pried the winch from the Landcruiser but I have put in approximately 20 hours of winching already and might need some care and maintenance by now.  All suggestions will be appreciated.

I simply douched the cable with WD40 and then followed that with a quality spray lubricant.(WD40 is NOT a lubricant!!!), ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS wear heavy leather gloves whenever you handle the cable, especially when paying it out to inspect clean and lube.

Before I acquired the Land cruiser winch, I was using Amsteel blue synthetic cable for my old Ramsey. Handling was definitely better than the steel cable.

I sold the old winch so I pried the winch from my old landcruiser with steel cable that has never been used.

I will however, go back to using synthetic rope as soon as I notice some strand breakages in my steel cable.

Thanks so much for the assistance.
