Title: 4 speed auto question....
Post by: airdreams1 on July 05, 2012, 03:35:15 PM
Im doing the 1.6 16v motor swap  & was wondering if anyone has done the matching 4 speed auto |removethispart|@ the same time?  (Trail tough sais I can have my harnice setup to use the trans at the3 same time & have it modifyed.)
Also wandering if there are any reliability issues with this trans if I do it.

& No I dont realy want to mess with the Volvo  4 speed thing.  it will cost way more in the long run.

any help would be appriciated.

The Volvo 4-speed is the same transmission, just without the wiring.  So any documentation covering it will work with your conversion.

Have you looked into a Kicker 3 setup?  That would give you the dual t-cases as well.

from what Ive read the Volvo/toyota 2wd trans can bolt up to the kick bell housing. but Ive heard that its much longer so you have to relocate the transfer case & make your own interediat shaft, etc,etc.....

I dont realy have a use for doual transfer case setup... the rig is going to be a daily driver  with ocasional off road use. (ie: camping, shooting & what not.... thatsaid Im looking for the 4 speed w/ lockout for freeway mpg....  I need the best mpg I can get.   + we have 75 mph speed limit here so I dont want it geared so low thatI top out |removethispart|@ 50....

Its hard to beleve that no one has had Trail tough do this yet???????  They said the can  do it & have. I just want to hear frm someone that has done it  to get some actual feedback.

a company called RADesign (i think) has a shifter that eliminates the need for a TCM. it makes the trany manually shifted but its an option, then you can use the suzuki trans. thinking of using it in my kick.

Does anyone have more info on the product mentioned for shifting for the 4spd OD without the TCM? Looked for Radesign but no luck. I have a couple of these Suzuki (Aisan) 4spds and would luv to know more.

This would be GREAT for me, I'd love to have the 4th gear of the newer trans in my 95, but I looked and didn't see anything about the GM/Suzuki trans. I also don't want to go through all the swapping and switching to get a Volvo trans in mine. I'd be more than happy manually shifting an auto as long as it's a Zuk bolt in.

As I understand it the 4 speed auto in a Vitara/Grand Vitara is an Aisin Warner AW4 - which is listed - but I've never had the opportunity to confirm that.

Now , all we need to figure out is if the 4 speed will physically fit the 1.6 without a whole bunch of mods. Didn't the later 2nd gen Trackicks get a 4speed with the 16V 1.6?

As I understand it, even first generation Trackicks had the 4 speed auto - don't ask  me which ones - but some of them did, and yes, all of second gen automatics were 4 speeds.

First gen. 4 door trackicks got the 4 speed auto (except for the oddball 91 4 door...which got the 3 speed).  All first gen. 2 doors got the 3 speed auto.

Thanks Sky. So, aside from the difference in rear driveshaft length of the 4 door, I'm thinking the bolt patterns for the bell housings are the same as the 3 speed, therfor it should bolt right up to the 1.6 16V block. If that's the case, I'm gonna start looking for a good 4 speed, and get the info on that manual shifting box. Anyone got a good 4 speed  ;D

Yeah the BH BP is the same between the 3 speeds and 4 speeds, since the 8V and 16V both use the same blocks.  The front dshaft is also a different length, because the 4 speed is a little longer than the 3 speed and 5 speed.
The 4 speed also used a different flex plate and TC, so you want to be sure and get those too.

Got it, thanks Sky. So I'm gonna need the trans, flexplate and TC, maybe the driveshafts too. Now to statr lookin for a good one.  ;D
