Title: How fast should a EFI 1.6 8valve be?
Post by: defispeed on August 06, 2012, 08:40:00 AM
Hi guys,

I recently got a sami with 1.6 EFI 8v swapped in. History unknown unfortunately.

Just did a tune-up - plugs, wires, 02 sensor, Accel Coil, seafom - the basics.

It runs quite well 1-3 gears pretty peppy actually, but once you hit 4th, she falls on her face...no power, 5th is a rare occurence. Tops out at about 50-55mph.

It has 31s and SPOA, I don't believe it's been re-geared.

Is it that necessary to re-gear for just 31s? Is there anything I should look at?  I've never driven a sami with this motor swapped in before, so I am not sure what to. compare it to.

With the condition of the motor unknown, I'm probably doing a leak down test this weekend and check the timing.

I have no intentions of driving this thing at 70 or 80mph, but I'd like to know that it could get there!

Thanks!

I recently bought an 87 with a 1.6l 16v running stock gearing with a spoa with 31's and it tops out at right about 85 according to the speedo. It does lose its power in 5th gear also so it takes a while to top Out. I'm debating changing the transfer case gearing.

50-55 isn't very impressive for a 1.6 conversion, what revs are you pulling at that speed? It probably is gearing but have you done a compression test?

That doesn't sound right.

I ran a  carbed 1,6 8v with stock gears and 31" tires for a while. I could run at 55-60 all day in 5th and plenty of power in 4th.

But I would still regear with anyting over a 30" tire

Have you checked your timing? I gained considerable power above 3500 rpm after I readjusted my timing, mine was 2 degrees BTDC.
