Post by: SIDEKICK65 on August 06, 2012, 10:38:24 PM

Factory gears ratios.....4.30, 4.62, 5.12, 5.38, 5.62.  The 5.38s and 5.62s aren't real common to find, but they are out there.
The used to make 5.83 aftermarket gears, but they haven't been available for several years.

5.38s are only found in 91 4 doors with the 1.6 8V engine and 5 speed.
5.62s are only found in 89 2 doors with the 1.3 carbed engine and 5 speed.

I am guessing you have 5.12s now?  If so, then 5.62s will be the better choice.  They still won't get you back to "stock" gearing with 33s, but they will be closer than 5.38s.

no, not all, , only the ones with a carburated 1.3 5speed came with the 5.62. i believe these to be the first production run in '88, that of course released as '89 model years
also, just for fun.....
keep and eye on the interiors, there is a EXTREMELY limited number of the '89 that had a brown interior, also from real early on in the model year.

Probably worth it for just the gears.  Swap out for your 5.12's and sell it back off again.  :D

If it is a tracker, then it won't have a carbed 1.3 (at least not from the factory).  Only a select few 89 sidekicks had the carbed 1.3.

Correct.

I actually had an 89 sidekick about a year ago that had the carbed 1.3 and brown interior. ;)

Not from the factory.  The only way they would have them, is if someone swapped them in.

Better check to see if they actually have them in stock.  5.83s haven't been made for several years, for the rear of trackicks.
