Title: front out drive play
Post by: standog on April 07, 2004, 04:47:10 AM
Should the passenger side Half shaft have some play where it enters the pumpkin (the green cylinder part)? Hope this makes some kind of sense. Everything drives and shifts fine. It is on my 03 Vitara.

Thanks

Clay

Is it up/down-front/back play, or in and out play?
I wouldn't think that it should have any play there at all.
Might not be a bad idea to take it to the dealer to have them check it out.

Sounds like the clip on the end of the axle is week or not there. It should sit snug to the case. Have you replaced the axle? If so, some of the rebuilds from Autozone Advance, etc... dont have the ring, so you have to pull it off of your broken axle.

it is in and out play. If you grab the shaft and move it there is no play. Just at the green piece. It does not feel like the whole axel is moving.

When you move it look and see if the flat part of the flange that sits up against the housing is pulling away from the housing, that is what the clip is restraining.

That is exactly where it is moving. Where is the clip? I pulled the axel when I put my coil spacer in. I pulled the clip out on the hub side but did nothing with the innner. How hard is it to replace. I plan on wheeling this weekend.

Thanks

There is a small ring on the end of the inner stub shaft (that slides into the housing) it is slightly larger tha than the shaft so when the shaft is pushed in it compresses untill it's cleared the sidegears, then it pops out to hold it in place. Let me look on izook and see if I have a pic of one. Back in a minute.

So I need to pull the shaft back out and install a new spring or just fix the one that is there? Will I be able to wheel this weekend or will I screw up the shaft?

Thanks.

IF it is sliding out much you may snap the splines off of the inner stub shaft (did it before, forgot to put the retainer on :P) I would definately drop that axle and check it before wheeling it. It sucks to pull it apart again but it;s better that traeing doen the whole axle housing to get broke axle parts out. Not to mention if it does not say against the seal and you get in any water it will fill up the housing with water.

I checked it agian today and there is about 1/16 of play. I never took the whole axel out when I did the spacer lift. I am going to crawl under a new one and see if it moves in the morning. If it is missing the clip then it has been that way for quite a long time with some serios wheeling being done. Lets hope for the best. Sided note got the RRO spacers on the back finaley and it looks more even with the front. not much of an overall lift about 1inch but every inch counts.

Thanks

If you still need a pick of the right axle I'll be right back with one. Any other pics needed?

Good to hear ;D I thought you were talking about more than 1/16. Have fun wheeling this weekend.

Your saying I took my front end apart for pics for nothing?
;D

I pick-up spare ones at wrecking yards for about 65 bucks. Always trying to find a reasonablely priced wrecking yard.  I mean Recycleing yard. ???
