So on my 86 sami with a rear auto locker from what i have found out through here is one or the bearings in the rear axle has broke. So I was wondering how to replace the bearings and if it is a back yard mechanic job or one best left to a pro.

You could do it yourself, but you will have to pull the axle shafts out of the axle tube. To get them out you will probably need a slide hammer you will also need to replace the axle seals. It can be a lot of work though, you also will need to remove the brake backing plates to get the shafts out.

well that seems a bit to involved for my skill level and budget. I just dropped a grand on my apartment so I guess ill have to park it till I can afford to have a mechanic do it. But thanks for the help.

here are a couple of links that might help you with rear axle removal:
Tracker video but the idea is similar:http://www.acksfaq.com/rear_axle_bearing_replacement.htm (http://www.acksfaq.com/rear_axle_bearing_replacement.htm)

...and this one which has some detail on the two types of rear axle bearings that are available:
