just bought my first samurai and bought it knowing that it won't go into reverse. when you try, it feels like your going far enough to the right with the stick and when you come down with it, it feels like its in 4th. theres also a lot of play side to side when you've got it in gear. also, on another note, when i bought it, the bracket that bolts from the back of the tranny to the frame was layin in the back, i put it on, but do y'all think this could mean some bent linkage? any and all help would be appreciated! new to this world and completely ignorant. I've done some light research here and haven't found a whole lot

Sounds like you may need to put this kit in. That would be the transmisson bushing and shifter bolt. Also check the track the bolt goes in to make sure it is in decent shape. It may solve all your problems.
