Title: Water pump question
Post by: MAYHEM760 on September 16, 2012, 01:12:15 PM
Have a 91 Tracker 1.6L 8V that I recently purchased.  Just did the new valve stem seals, plugs, wires, valve lash, valve cover gasket, thermostat/gasket. As I was put everything back together, I had planned on filling the cooling system with distilled water to flush it completely out.  That's when the water pump started to make noise like the bearings were going out and it started to leak between the water pump and the engine block.

The guy who I purchased the Track from said he did the timing belt but didn't do the water pump for some reason (crazy).  My question is, is there a way to just replace the water pump with out having to do the timing belt as well?  I really don't want have to do all that if I don't need to.

Thanks in advance,

The water pump sits behind the timing belt.  So the belt has to come off, so the water pump can be removed.  The timing belt tensioner pulley bolt also bolts to the water pump.

Ok thats what I thought.

Just drain the cooling system and not the oil?
