Title: Head Bolt Hole problem
Post by: RJkick on September 19, 2012, 07:51:51 AM
I recently had the head done and the #1 bolt hole is cross threaded.  I tried to tap it and create new threads but the aluminum threads just pulled out.  I was thinking of a Heli Coil as my next step.

Is there something else I should try first and will a heli coil work in the head?

Also, the FSM states 89inch pounds but that seems pretty tight and I don't want to break anything - Has anyone else torqued the cam cap bolts that tight?

Any thoughts or suggestions please reply

Thanks

That is only 7.4 foot pounds

What hole did you strip out?

http://timesert.com/html/install.html (http://timesert.com/html/install.html)

I have been using these sense the Seventies, I used to know the guy that invented them, they make them in metric and American threads. They are not cheap but I think that they are the best, the tool works with different lengths you just have to buy the insert that you need or get an assortment of them, I have fixed many a spark plug thread on a running rig that spit a plug out and had it running in ten minutes and was better than new when I was done with it and would save a friend two grand or better, the only thing is they never seem to replace the insert they used, other than that they are great!

I called the Engine shop to let them know what happened and they said take it back off and they will fix it.  I guess it pays to go to a good shop.  Customer service isn't dead I suppose.

I will torque the caps when I pick it up - at least I will be at the shop if I get in trouble

I think they actually used air tools on the cam cap and did it

thanks

If they used an air tool to install the cam cap bolts....then I would not call them a "good shop". ::)  Hopefully, they will make it right.  But if they would have done it properly in the first place, they wouldn't have to be fixing it.
Sounds like you are talking about the cam cap bolts, not the actual head bolts.  The head bolt torque is up around 50ft.lbs.

True - I will ask them about how it happened to make sure it isn't repeated.  I do like them standing behind the issue though.

Helicoils work well, when I used to work on military stuff they were obligatory on smaller threads in ally.

I just finished rebuilding an engine for mine and when torquing the cam caps 89 inch pounds seemed too light . But hey, that's what the manual calls for. The head to block bolts only called for 52ft.lbs, in three stages, when installing it. When I went to pull the head off when stripping the engine for rebuild I had to use a 3 foot long breaker bar to crack 'em loose. I guess they tighten up with expansion of the parts during heat cycles. Those engineers know what they're doing.  ;)
