Well on my 86 Sami lifted with 30s I was having a h
Popping noise from the rear. I tore it down and the diff was diff was full of mud water so that's not a very good lubrication...whoda thunk it. So I drained the front diff same thing. But I do not know how to Tare down the front. Any advice?

there is a good write up on izook.com

Would you say it was a pop or a muted clunk? I thought I had a bad u-joint, but when I turned the drive shaft to see where the play was, it really sounded like it was inside the pumpkin. I'm worried my gears are shot and I will need to tear down the rear axle. My biggest fear is I will then need to put an ARB in there while it is torn apart.

for me it was fairly obvious once i got underneath the sami. It was a very loud pop and felt like the gears werent releasing. I took the drive shaft off and i was able to wiggle the output shaft. I have it apart now and it is one of the many bearings that went out. its a fairly easy and cheap fix. im gonna repair both front and rear while im at it.

Thanks! I will be taking the drive shaft off this week to clean it up and give it a fresh coat of paint when I put the new 6.5:1 t-case in. I'll see how much play there is at the output shaft and acess from there.
