Title: 89 Gear Ratio
Post by: explosivo on April 04, 2004, 02:53:42 PM
So I picked up my parts Tracker... never thought to ask the year, and on the way home I was looking at the title, and found out it's an 89... the year they made them with the 1.3L...

The reason I bought this vehicle was to take the front differential out and stick it in my Tracker without messing with the internals. However, I thought I remember reading somewhere that the 89 gear ratio was different than the 5.12 of my Tracker... can anyone confirm this?

I'm going digging for that info now, just wanted to see if anyone knew for sure.

Can't really help you with your problem but maybe you can help me with mine? I've been considering going injection but never can find a complete unmolested setup (harness's, ecm, intake, dashcluster, ect.). Would you be interested in parting it out to a good home (87 Sami)? :-/  Mail me with your decision.
Pete

I would, but I think I may have a local buyer that wants the engine and electrical goodies. The engine that's in it now has a nasty knock, but I got a good block assembly with the Tracker that is supposed to work...

W00t!

According to the sticker on the hood it was a model with the 97ci engine... 97ci = ~1589cc. So I believe that it is, in fact, a model with the 1.6L... so I can do a straight swap. YAY! ;D

The 1.3L Sidekicks from 1989 had 5.86 gears in them (or a ratio close to that number)

These trucks are hard to find because halfway through 1989 they switched to 1.6L engines with 5.12 gears.

If you do find a 1989 1.3L sidekick, for the love of god do not get rid of the gears!

They are the stock equivilent to the Calmini 5.83 gears.

Unfortunately, it's the 1.6L version... completely forgot that the 1.3L Tracker had lower gears... for some reason I was thinking higher, but that's the 1.6L auto version of all Track/kicks...

The upside of it all is that I don't have to swap the back too :D

I thought the 1.3 R&Ps were something like 5:38, quite different to the 5:83 Calmini items

Yea, I think your right, 5.3? . It's lower than the 1.6L but not as low as the Calmini gears.

I got the new diff back in, but haven't tested it out yet, since if something breaks, I'll feel the need to finish it up... and I'm fucking tired...

So I'm hoping that everythings all good when I go to test it out tomorrow. :)
