Got question prob a stupid one. just put my first motor(1.6 8v auto) back in. forgot the metal gasket/dust guard that goes between the bell housing and block. is this gonna be a problem?
-
Do you mean the guard that goes on the bottom to keep dirt out from getting into the bell housing?
-
The most likely problems you may run into are a chewn up starter drive from dirt getting into it as well as starter failure from dirt in the bearings. You might also get dirt into the rear main seal and open up an oil leak.

water and mud on your throw out bearing . dirt in the clutch and a wet clutch faster when in deep water. :-X

Bite the bullet and put it in. It can be slipped in by sliding the trans back a bit.

Sounds like he might be talking about the upper spacer, not the lower dust shield.
The spacer also locates/stabilizes the starter. I would slide the tranny back and install the spacer, if it were me.
