Threaded pipe cap that screws into a nut in the lower pipe...

Can ya see it... How about now?

The cross bar has an open piece of 1.5" pipe welded to the end. The drivers side 1.5" uprite has a nut welded into a washer and caps off the top.
I then took a piece of 1.25" pipe X 2" wide and sleeve the OD to fit nicely inside the 1.5 crossbar end. Once I did that I welded a washer with a bolt on the bottom, the top I welded a cap on. This screws inside of the crossbar end and holds everything in place.
I did drill a hole through the cap so I can tighten it down firmly and there is a tab welded on the crossbar so I could put a padlock on it if I choose too.
I used the OEM tire carrier but welded a piece of 3/16's plate to the crossbar for it to mount to. It supports a 33 - 36" tire easily. If you make this style bumper you will have no more damaged rear corners because the uprites protect them. I have similar uprites on the front bumper as well.

the ZOR setup I have uses a T-bolt. Not exactly quick release but definately solid (& rattle-proof).

That's a pretty good set up Warbird... I like it if you run with the can. If not I would prefer to have the tire in the center for even weight distribution.
You mentioned the word rattle. That is one of the best things about moving these tires off of the tailgate. Those rattles disappear once the weight is gone from there. I really liked that!
Cost wise for the bumper I built I have less than $75.00 on it. The lights were the most expensive and I was lucky enuff to get them used.

I need to get a pic of my rear swing away for ya. At The latch I use is a super strong handle type latch that opens with one hand in a snap and locks securely. I think I posted up with pics when I built it, and know I have pics at my flicker site www.fllickr.com/photos/bentparts (http://www.fllickr.com/photos/bentparts) but I'll snap one tomorrow and get it up here.

Swing Away latch and lock, CB antenne mount. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/bentparts/2894474385/#) Got the latch online but it's been awhile and not sure of the company. I'll try and find it if your interested.
