Title: 4x4 manual hub

I have a 92 geo tracker. One of the manual 4x4 hubs turns easy and one feels a little sticky but turns all the way. I noticed it was cracked yesterday and got to looking when turning it from "free" to "locked" a rubber type o-ring appearing piece was coming out of the crack and is torn.... Can I just take the screws off and replace this or is it more serious of a fix than that?

To my knowledge, you shoud just be able to remove retaining bolts and hub will pull out by hand.  The only tuff part is getting the new hub installed.  There are two stopper studs that need to line up with the corresponding grooves of the hub body.  But other then that, replacing hubs is not that difficult.  Make sure you use the correct gaskets.  Stay away from using RTV sealer-poor mans fix.  This will only cause problems in the future.

RTV will work fine.  Just put a nice thin, even layer on....don't use half a tube on it. ::)

I've seen a lot of people use the RTV on hubs.  Ya, it works but most use a ton and it breaks off and jams up the hub.  If you don't know how much is to much, save yourself the headache and buy the correct gaskets.

I think the OP is referring to the O-ring around the actuator knob... RTV would be a bad idea there as it wouldn't allow the knob to be turned.
Yes that O-ring can be replaced as long as you can find the right size. You mention a crack, is the knob itself cracked? If so it'd be a good idea to try & find a replacement part. Depending how it's cracked... it could let water & dirt inside the hub, which is really bad.

I appreciate the replies very much, I am currently looking for hubs. They still function well, but I was also concerned about water and dirt.
