Post by: plumcrazy2 on October 22, 2012, 12:29:33 PM
some pic and mods. on my 91 4dr. kick
its a 91 4dr that was stripped to frame and cage was added. engine was moved back approx 2 feet.( front driveshaft in back rear in front) simple bolt in if using a std.) i,m not running a sidekick spd auto bolted to an 89 nissan 240 sx engine(ka24e) with a garrett turbo with about 20lbs of boost and a liquid to air incooler with cool box. putting out  roughly 320hp at the wheel. Stock sidekick axles with king bump stops all the way around, dual shocks at each corner.

That thing looks cool, thanks for sharing. I dig the bumpstop up front in the original location.

I've toyed with this type setup, but I wasn't clear how the "air shocks" or "coilovers shock" would handle to the "side" forces seen by struts. Also to get an improvement in stroke, you have to get some crazy long lengths, and they start to become unpractical. I also kinda had a feeling they might not last, but never got to try it. I had one other idea, but have yet to pursue it may happen someday but really I'll probably just do double Aarm if I want this IFS still.

Looks like your pretty skilled on fab, so have you thought about this more traditional double Aarm setup? Just fab a "new" top Aarm and then use a more "regular" shock mounted to the bottom aarm(which will give you some more clearance for longer stroke). Find like a smaller donor car and you may be able to do it on a junkyard budget.

At the point you do get the travel, you may see that the CVs dont last. Are you having any problems with the front CVs now??

putting bump stops there also helped with the towers bending in. bump stops are the done the same way in the rear. have only broke one cv in 5 years and 2 rear axles. have thought about the double arms just haven`t tackled it yet

I think I see why you kept bending shafts. Bobs kit braces the lower part of the shaft where it meets the knuckle on all sides. He also uses a strut tower brace to keep them from bending in. The towers are pretty flexable.

In this photo the coilover is mounted to the lower right hand side bolt. So you can see how much shaft is braced there. Also this setup has a full 8" of travel at the shock. That is almost 2" more than a stock strut. I thought the front of my race kick felt good but this is way better.

another reason my shafts bent is they told me a 7/8" shaft would hold up (in a 2"x10" coilover) to the side loads, and i believe kreator is using 1.25". big difference. that`s my opinion be free to chime in. how is spring mounted on bottom so everything will turn (rotate) when you turn the wheels

Are you running a front locker? I'm assuming you are for sure locked in the Rear?

Ok so you have 10 shocks now ? and are your bottom arms stock? My arms move the hub 1" out and 1 " forward , how much travel do you have how ?  what is the length  between the bottom strut mounting bolt on the spindle  and the top shock mount ?do you have IFS drop brackets already ? with you already having bump stops all you would need to do with my struts and lower mount  is put limit straps to help support at drop out

ok stock struts still in front, with coilover shock beside it raising up front stock front springs gone , no drop brackets on front diff. 2 shocks at each corner in back with hyd. bump stops not sure what rear springs are but it is lifted with no drop bracket on 3rd link. front coilovers and stock strut plus hyd. bump stops. (all bump stops are in stock location)as  for heights i`ll have to measure its on stands right now so i`ll but together and check but it raised up a bit with coilovers. control arms are stock and in stock location.

travel i s everything strut has (i believe that is 6.5"  bump stops stop travel just before strut runs out out of travel maybe .25 inch strut travel left.

where you say top of shock mount you want measurement under the tower where shock top is correct. if so measuring buy hooking measuring tape under bolt to top edge of shock top under the tower is aprrox. 17 and 3/4 inches. that`s pretty damn close

I didn't see that you had the stock strut still there with coil over next to it . My 41/2 " front has about 9 1/2 " travel at hub and can be set up to be no taller than you are now with more drop out .

that sounds like what i`m looking for then. in that pic. stock strut not there only had the coilover but bent shafts only7/8 so had to put stock struts back in and put coilover where i had my second shock located.
