Most likely just me and the Sidekick Sport this year...
I plan on heading over to cabin lake on Thursday; anybody else headed over a night early?
-
Yup, Yup, I'm in.
-

-
I'm in... I may have Mason with me... and not sure yet if I'll be in the Sidekick or Land Cruiser...
-
One of the things I'm interested in improving is having an activity during the evening hours. I was thinking of an "engineering challenge" ... build some sort of simple contraption to perform a task and have a contest...
some thoughts are:
1) launch glow-in-the-dark apples? (or other fruit) for distance or accuracy.
2) Most number of an object through an orifice in a certain amount of time.
3) largest weight moved by the smallest device.
etc..
Comments?
-Eric
-
Put me on the list of attending. I am in with the FJ.
I may try to get out there Thursday... after work.
-Val
-
I am in. I will be working in Hillsboro during that time. I will think about driving the Sport up there, but may be in a rental Heep.

Just a note on Mr. Bewley's requirements:
10 - Have an FM radio that can send and receive on the MURS frequencies. (Hardly anyone has a CB and they don't work well at those distances anyway)
We had some difficulty with communications last year that resulted in the group getting split up inadvertently, people waiting for other people who weren't coming, lots of wasted time, etc. Those of us with VHF radios were able to communicate clearly for the entire trip, even over long distances. With the cost of a new radio being less than the cost of a tank of gas, everybody should have one in their vehicle! For those who don't know what MURS frequencies are or how to get a radio that uses them, I'll offer up a cheap option:
Radio:
http://www.amazon.com/Baofeng-Warranty-Dual-Band-Radio-Improved/dp/B00HX03AMA/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1441157388&sr=1-2&keywords=baofeng+uv-5r (http://www.amazon.com/Baofeng-Warranty-Dual-Band-Radio-Improved/dp/B00HX03AMA/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1441157388&sr=1-2&keywords=baofeng+uv-5r)
Battery eliminator:
http://www.amazon.com/EarlyBirdSavings-Battery-Adapter-Eliminator-Baofeng/dp/B009RCQWLI/ref=pd_sim_422_9?ie=UTF8&refRID=15VPKYVBYNV3TH6K583S (http://www.amazon.com/EarlyBirdSavings-Battery-Adapter-Eliminator-Baofeng/dp/B009RCQWLI/ref=pd_sim_422_9?ie=UTF8&refRID=15VPKYVBYNV3TH6K583S)
External antenna:
http://www.amazon.com/Nagoya-SMA-Female-Antenna-Baofeng-UT-108UV/dp/B00DTQ4A6M/ref=pd_sim_422_6?ie=UTF8&refRID=15VPKYVBYNV3TH6K583S&dpSrc=sims&dpST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_ (http://www.amazon.com/Nagoya-SMA-Female-Antenna-Baofeng-UT-108UV/dp/B00DTQ4A6M/ref=pd_sim_422_6?ie=UTF8&refRID=15VPKYVBYNV3TH6K583S&dpSrc=sims&dpST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_)
The battery eliminator is almost a "must have" because without it, you'll end up with a dead battery during the trip and a useless brick of a radio. Another (more expensive) option would be to get a couple of spare batteries and an external charger.
The external antenna is another option; it will nearly double the range of the radio. Not necessary in most cases, but nice to have.
A couple of us have our amateur radio licenses; if you want more information on this radio or a more expensive setup, shoot me a PM. I'd be glad to help. I'm looking forward to less confusion in the group this year!
-
so is that the radio that everyone will be using , I have a cb antenna will that plug into the radio?
-
Great suggestion sewerzuk. We have used the BaoFeng all over without issue. The prices have come down also.
-
so is that the radio that everyone will be using , I have a cb antenna will that plug into the radio?
No, a CB antenna typically uses a PL type connector and won't plug into the baofeng. It is possible to get an adapter to make it fit, but do not do this. The CB antenna is not tuned properly for the VHF band and at best won't work, at worst damage the Baofeng radio. They work fine with the "rubber ducky" antenna that they come with, but the mag-mount antenna I posted a link to is only about $7 and it offers a good boost in range.
-
No takers on the 'engineering challenge' eh? How about a 'chug' contest with cans of Easy Cheese?
That'd make memories! :)
-Eric
-
I don't think it was clear that you were looking for people to sign up. I think an evening activity like that could be fun as long as we don't arrive at camp too late.
-
I agree with with Invincible about it being fun. I just don't have anything good to add.
Ignore whatever photo that gets randomly attached to this post.
-

Good point David..
I'm gauging interested to see if it's worth putting something together. In the past I've come up with things and only had mixed success. I think launching glowing apples into the darkness may be pretty fun??? Or chugging easy cheese in world record time, also fun. ;)
-Eric
-
I'm up for the engineering challenge, and I've been giving it some thought. I just haven't come up with a good idea yet!
Sounds like a can of easy cheese needs to be involved though. I'll visit the "101 uses for a can of easy cheese" page and see if I can come up with something other than a chug contest. Chugging easy cheese is a bad idea in a camp with no toilet.
On another note...what is up with all of the random photos being attached to posts here? Is it a problem with the ZW forum? A problem with the tapatalk app?
-
Launching things and fire are always cool.
-
Launching flaming cans of easy cheese?
-
Lets shoot skeet with tannerite.
-
I'm in / email sent.....
Will bring lots of recovery gear and if needed, a spud gun for the engineering challenge....
And lots of cold weather gear ... HAVE YOU SEEN THE Farmers almanac forecast for the 2015/2016 winter? BRRRRRR!
Looking forward to FINALLLLLLY MAKING THIS TRIP...... The whole faces to names thing.....
I am familiar with the " China hat " aria , as I have ridden it for many years .....
Wahooooooooo.
-
Very cool! It'll be great... You might could caravan over with Matt. He's coming from the Seaside / Astoria area. I think that's close to you?
-Eric
-
A few things that would make camp better... Besides the stuff on the list in the first post, if people could bring a string of LED Christmas lights, (Or something like that) that runs of off a self contained battery pack, that'd be great. It seems that the better we light up the camp area the more fun and social it is. Davey had mentioned this Christmas tree light thing and I think it's great. I'm hoping he can pop in here with an Amazon link or something like that to help us zero in on this.
Anyone ever seen that demonstration where they make glow in the dark Mt. dew?
-Eric
-
LED String Lights are easy to get and pretty cheap. Here are some Amazon links:

-Eric
Boxcar's been out to my shop before. Besides the Nissan engine in his Samurai, I was intrigued by the electric belt-driven air compressor under the hood. Pretty cool stuff.
-
Hi Gang - I'm back from Toronto... Another thing we could really use as a group is one Easy up or Pop UP to put over the communal table. Does anyone have one of those they could bring along in their kit?
There are some Itinerary updates happening on the first post of this thread so please take a look. Davey has done some excellent homework and has suggested some fun for Thursday as well.
-Eric
-
Ok, We've roughed in an itinerary. Please chime in if you have comments/suggestions. There is also an attached .dat file on the first post that will help you program your radio if you have the UV-5R model.
-Eric
-
Gotcha covered. I'll toss mine in the roof basket..... I have a nice new 10x10.
Anything else?
Hey Matt . Good to here from ya again.....
-
Eric,
Thanks for the DAT file!
I have my Baofeng handheld loaded up with the frequencies.
I will bring a laptop, the USB cord. I'm volunteering to and load the DAT to any other attendees radio if they would like. While I'm at it, I'll can spend 5-10 minutes with every one that has one to go over "Tips n Tricks". I think that will help keep everyone in better communication. I'm no radio expert, but maybe just hosting a round table discussion before we hit the trail?
For those of you looking for the dat. Look at the bottom of the first post. That is where I found it attached.

ANOTHER EVENING ACTIVITY IN THE WORKS!
OK, so another thing we're planning to do in the evening(s) is launch some rockets! You can get model rockets pretty cheap (amazon.com)... The emergency flares in previous years have been a blast, so why not step it up and launch some stuff even higher! So order something up and bring it on the trip - it'll be fun! :)

Hey Rockets! That's a good idea...
-Eric
-
Ok, I just ordered a pile of those LED string lights for camp. Should be fantastic! I got the multicolored with the remotes so we can make them flash and have a 'burning man' experience.
;)
-Eric
-
Just got another sign up! Joe from Seattle has been with us before, I think back in 2011...
Anybody come up with a "plus 1" yet? :)
-Eric
-
this sounds pretty rad. i probably wont be able to make it, but i'll try my best. If i do go it will be last minute.
I just scored a completely stock tin top and I intend to keep it that way (heard that before).
About the radios though,
are there any radios that can function both on CB frequencies and MURS frequencies?
-
are there any radios that can function both on CB frequencies and MURS frequencies?
I can't say for sure that one does not exist, but I've never seen a radio that can work on both CB frequencies and VHF/UHF FM frequencies. CB is AM and requires a completely different kind of hardware than a FM VHF/UHF radio. If there is one out there, it would essentially be two separate radios housed inside of one case.
-
hmm. thanks for the info. Yeah i hadn't heard of anything that is capable of both.
-

Heres a few ideas:
1) the finest and most convenient cup of joe
2) Best method to stay warm in the evening
3) the most impressive light show
-
I like some of those ideas for sure...
-Eric
-
Just a reminder... We will be going to the dunes so consider bringing a high-visibility flag and get a OHV tag. For those coming from out of state / country. Oregon recognizes current OHV permits from other jurisdictions.

REMEMBER WE HAVE OUR OWN GEOCACHE NEAR CAMP!? Bring something cool to put in it this year!!! :)

Just added three more vehicles! Looks like a banner year... Don't forget your Orange flag and OHV permit if you want to do the dunes section of the adventure.

A major serious question...
Chili or Stew for the potluck?

I'll bring a launch pad and a couple of cheap rockets...maybe a dozen "A" and "C" engines and some wadding. Maybe some Pyrodex. Maybe some Pyrodex and Tannerite.

...and that's why we love having you (Verley) come with us on adventures! I have much of that stuff with me as well, and it's awesome to travel with folks that are prepared for anything! 8)
There are many of us bring 'Merica type stuff this year, so that will be extra fun! I have a big pumpkin I'll try to bring out (if its not too rotten) so we can make something explode nicely.

I've had a few people contact me who had problems with the DAT file that is attached to the first post; so I tried to update my radio with it today and couldn't make it work either. Some of us must be using different versions of CHIRP and/or different radio versions. If I try to send that file to my UV-5R it results in a whole bunch of unusable and incorrect frequencies. Rather than try to figure out why that file won't work for me (and those who contacted me) I made up a "generic" radio file that works well for this trip. It has FRS, GMRS, and MURS frequencies programmed in, and even has a Zukiworld welcome screen :)The file is attached to this post in ZIP format (you'll need to extract the CHIRP image prior to loading it into CHIRP). Feel free to contact me with any questions...
Download the latest version of CHIRP from here:

Sewerzuk's list is giving me inadequacy issues. I need a bigger list for myself. All kidding aside, thank you for sharing your list. It is good information for others to start with.

It's not a CHIRP file, that may be the problem. It was made with the Baofeng software that comes with the radios.
Thanks for helping folks, I hadn't received any questions on the file so I thought it was OK for everyone.

Ok; CHIRP is supposed to be able to use those DAT files. For some reason it was programming in frequencies in the 300mhz range. A few other people ran into a similar problem. Not a big deal ;)
I will be bringing a couple of radios, so I will have a backup radio if somebody arrives without one.
-
I used the software that came with the radio ... it was a little quirky until I found the "English" button to display the menus in English instead of ????????? ' s And then I was able to load the dat lickity split. I'll bring my laptop, data cable and help anyone who wants the help to get the data loaded. I suspect loading the data file will wipe out any entries already programed. The software didn't strike me as one that would deal with that properly.
-
One or two more screws... And I'll be ready for fall classic!
-
No more arguments from my multiple personalities on what device to plug in to the one 12 volt outlet

Nice; I added one to my console last night too.
I'm actually running 4 power sockets now!
1. ARB freezer/fridge
2. Dual USB charger for phone and tablet
3. Inverter for camera and heated coat battery charger
4. Power for Cell phone repeater

Looks like the PMO got some snow last night:

Snowing right now!
For those thinking of driving the dunes, don't forget your high-visibility flag and an OHV tag.
-Eric
-
Sidekick is almost fully packed and ready to go! Should be ready to head out first thing on Thursday morning.
-
I hate to make this decision but due to Physical constraints I won't be able to attend the classic again this year.
I will be going under the knife Thursday and will be in no condition for the drive.
No worries , it's just a compressed disk in my neck....
Was hoping to be able to put the surgery off until after the run but no dice...
you guys and galls have fun.....
-
We're in, barring any sort of craziness! First fall classic.
Dune flag. Must remember the dune flag ... :P
-
What time on Friday will the chili cookout be do you think? We will be heading in from Eugene around 5, so arriving around 8-8:30 if all goes to plan and were hoping to join in on that if it's more of a later dinner. :P
-
well thinking that I had all ducks in a row work decided to send me and my crew outta town for work ....leaving tomorrow for 2 weeks. I usually work in Vancouver bc but high end job and they say that im the guy that needs to do this for them. so once again im not going to f^|removethispart|@% make it this year.... my xmas bonus better be good. hope you guys have fun and take lots of pix
-
A major serious question...
Chili or Stew for the potluck?
-Eric
Ill weigh in indecisively. I'm bringing one can of each!

What time on Friday will the chili cookout be do you think? We will be heading in from Eugene around 5, so arriving around 8-8:30 if all goes to plan and were hoping to join in on that if it's more of a later dinner. :P
We'll be into the chili feed before then but I can keep the kettle on low for awhile and we'll all be up around the campfire at that time. See ya!

PICTURE DUMP! We just got back from the event where we had a great time. Thanks to everyone that came out. It was nice to see so many repeat visitors and some new faces too! I've attached a couple shots of the weekend. If anyone else would like to put some up, please do so. We'll have a write up on the main page shortly.
Thanks, Eric

Great share. I think I'm going to get one. It needs to be mounted outside though to keep the awesome smells out of the cab while the food is cooking.

Ah ha! I see they make a 12V slow cooker, too! Now that'd be interesting.
