Title: 89 samurai engine/install cost???
Post by: jetch114 on October 03, 2015, 12:23:00 AM
Hi- I have a in good shape 89 samurai with the exception of the engine. Local/ credible mechanic shop quoted me a price of $3900.00 for a new engine and install out the door. I'm not a mechanic nor do I have a lot of knowledge with engine rebuild/repair.
My question is, does that price seem within reason for a new stock 1.3 l plus labor? I know it's a bit of a loaded question but am trying to get some input to insure in not being taken advantage of.
Thankyou for your time and input/advice

$3900 seems a bit steep.
A rebuilt long block is around $1800 . $2100 labor to r&r the engine is steep , very steep...
Even if this price includes replacing the clutch ( which it should ) $200 parts... and $100 for misc. parts
That is still $1800 labor to do the swap.
 $400-600 to high.....

Thank you. I'm going to get an itemized estimate on Monday.

The Samurai engine is probably the most easy automotive engine to remove/install besides the old air-cooled VW Beetle/Bus engines.  Have you considered making the engine replacement a DIY project?  If you have any mechanical ability I would strongly consider it.
