Man, I would kill for a Jimny.  Why does America not have cool offroad vehicles anymore?

More likely Americans' aversion to buying small vehicles.

"Tree hugging liberals" would love the Jimny for its small footprint and good fuel economy. Gun-toting conservatives would love it for its off-road capability and ability to go anywhere. You know what? The Jimny might just solve world peace!

OK, all kidding aside, this is a very interesting comparison. I've heard people say that the Renegade is the "new Suzuki Samurai," which always makes me cringe a little.

In its class, the Renegade is great. It's a strong competitor against other CUVs, such as the Subaru Crosstrek, Honda HR-V, Chevrolet Trax, and Mazda CX-3. And if you're looking to take a new CUV off the pavement, the Renegade is a great choice. That being said, its lack of a real low range is its biggest hangup for a "wheeler."

This Aussie comparison is a bit like comparing a Honda Ridgeline to a Ford F-150. Yes, they're both pickups, but one is car based, the other is truck based.

FYI, I've driven both the Trailhawk and Sport versions of the Renegade, and I really like them. But it's not something I'd go wheeling in Moab with. Unfortunately, no one other that Jeep is offering a smallish SUV that's truly capable. And while some people wish they could have an Aston Martin, a Lamborghini, or a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen, I wish I could have a Suzuki Jimny. Only about eight more years and we'll be able to legally import the last bodystyle in to the U.S.!

Around the same time we will also be able to import the factory, Peugeot 1.9 Turbo Diesel LWB Samurais marketed in Europe and Central America.   :)

15 years ago when I was stationed in Germany it did cross my mind to try to sneak a newer European-market, circa 2000, Samurai back to the states.  I knew that many people snuck in Austin Minis (vintage style, but built in the late 90s), old Rovers, etc by swapping VIN plates.  (Visually the new vehicles were identical to the vintage versions.) Pretty gutsy and highly illegal, but many got away with it. 

However, I did bring back (legally) a 1956 VW Beetle.   8)  Once a vehicle is 25 years old, the DOT/EPA could care less, and it glides right through customs.

I didn't know they were still selling LWB Samurai's in Central America, I thought the Indian market was the only spot left besides New Zealand with the truck model.
