Hi. I have a 96 sidekick jlx sport with the 1.8l auto. I was wondering if you can swap a 94 tracker 1.6l 8v 5 speed tranny into it? Thanks in advance.

I believe you can, but from what I recall, it is not a direct bolt-up swap - I think there is a difference in the clutch/input shaft area.

Sorry - I just realized that your 1.8 is an automatic, my earlier reply was considering a 1.8, 5 speed to a 1.6, 5 speed - an auto to manual swap is a lot more involved - in addition to the mechanical aspects of the swap, you'll have to consider the electronics.

The body of the 5 speeds in the 1.8 sidekick sports and the 1.6 regular trackicks are the same. The bellhousings are different, because the 1.8 uses a hydraulic clutch and the 1.6 uses a cable actuated clutch. The flywheels are different between 1.8 and 1.6 trackicks.
As far as swapping from a 1.8 auto to a 1.6 5 speed. I supposed it could be done. There aren't any electronics that control the 5 speed, like there is with the auto tranny.
The tranny lengths are different between the 1.8 4 speed auto and the manual 5 speed tranny. So you will need driveshafts to match the tranny (5 speed auto) and wheelbase (2 door or 4 door) combination.
The transfer case shifter will also have a slightly different bend in it. You can either get one from a transfer case that came from a 4 speed auto 4 door, or you can probably bend the one you have to work.
