Title: How to make sure intake manifold is good before installing on new motor.
Post by: Pinscher62 on January 20, 2016, 10:49:36 PM
Hey All,
Is there a way to check an intake manfold before I install it on a new motor?  I want to be certain it is not cracked or warped or anything else before i install it.  Is there any shops that do this type of work? Not sure if this is in the relm of a machine shop.  I just want to be sure there are no cracks that could leak water into my intake valves.
Thanks for your help as usual.

You can check for warping with a straight edge and feeler gauges, but if you want crack/pressure testing you're going to need to build a jig of sorts - flat plate cut to fit and bolt to the flanges, with either a gasket or RTV sealant, drill a hole somewhere and add a Schrader tire valve (get one of the flanged screw-in ones for alloy rims), pressurize the manifold and immerse it in a tank full of water (try either a radiator shop or a tire repair place).

Apart from possible warping of the flanges, I don't see much else as being an issue - it's not like the intake is a highly stressed part.
