i was wondering if power strering was vital? or can i get away w.o it? i will probably have 35" tires when i am totaly done with the 91 trac...so i just want some opinions on how hard it wil be to steer
-
How big are your arms?
-
well i have drivin this car for about a year now w.o power steering and i dont even notice the difference
besides i could always work out more =)
doesnt the dirt on the trails make it easier to turn??
-
Making the move from stock, wimpy, 27" tires, to heavy, strong 31X10.50's makes them a LOT harder to turn.
How are you going to put 35's on a Tracker? Just chop the fenders with a sawzall?
-
Not necessary but I would reccomend it. I have been running 33's and manual steering for a while now. You get a real good work out on the trail fighting the front locker but it is managable. You will definately need to learn to 'rock the vehicle when slow turning with the locker. Power steering is being installed on the kick as we speek and I can not wait. If you can afford it get a Kit (or parts off of a junker) and do it. It will make trailriding alot more enjoyable.

since power steering is the topic, how much work/time is it to put in a power steering kit in an early nineties (91) tracker?
-
what does rock the car mean??
i have a whole list of things are going onto the tracker..will take about 7 months to realize seeing as things are expensive..but itl get there i finally got a job so i am excited to finally get to work on the tracker..
-
Rocking the car is when you rock your vehicle back and forth with some fancy clutch work.
Wheels turn a lot easier when they are moving. So if you’re rocking your truck back and forth it’s a lot easier to re-angle your tires when your in the rocks.
I really don't mind my manual steering. The 31's are manageable in the rocks, and I know I'm not going to break any of my steering assembly with my arm strength. Where as a power steering unit can easily break the linkage if you have a tire up against a rock and you try to crank the steering wheel.
-
yah that breakage was the reason i was thinking of not doing the power steering..i have the whole power steering setup in my garage from another tracker..i also have the hard top so i was going to put that in...
i was mistaken also i was thinking 33" tires..or 31s not 35s..dont know where that came from
-
Power steering will be a direct bolt in. They have the same bolt pattern on the frame and obviously the engine has the same holes on it. As far as breakage, you should be ok with that. 8)
-
Once you go p/s you'll wonder how you did it for so long. I love what toyota did for me on my sami. ;D
-
well i have a PS setup from a tracker that my dad took out of a car at pick n pull ( hes the manager so it was free)..now it may not work..it probably does
but i am just wondering should i add that to my list of things to do..
also does a steering stabilizer help steering at all? or make it worse at all??
i have never really been into 4x4 so i am trying my best to learn..doing good so far lol
i can drive atleased =)
-
on the trails, power steering is a plus.A beefed up power steering system is even better
-
beefed up? do u have any links to a beffed up one..all i have seen is an idler arm brace for the PS on calminis site
i am kind of compilaing everything i am going to need so i can buy things and stock pile..i also dont want to have forgoten anything when i start tearing my lil truck apart lol
-
A vehical is only as good as its weakest link...I'll search and get back to ya
-
thank you very much
and i know that..i just dont want to be the weakest link ;D
-
Sidekick or samuri
-
I'll try it a little later
-
i have a 1991 geo tracker/suzuki side kick 2 door soft top 4wd 5spd..cant think of anything else..if i left something out let me know
-
It's good that you want to cover every angle of your truck and beef it up. But remember that you can go wheeling in your stock tracker and still get pretty far.
Before I lifted my truck I never took it off road much because I was always under the impression that you wouldn’t get anywhere in a stock vehicle.
Sure the lift and big tires make a huge difference, but I go wheeling now and then with people who are running stock Trackers or Samurais and I'm amazed at how far they get into the bush before they need a little help.
I'm kind of kicking myself in the ass for not enjoying my truck as much as I could have before I put the lift in.
So don't live under the impression that if you take your stock tracker into the bush that its gonna blow up or something. Its good to beef up parts, but its also good to enjoy your vehicle. Because in retrospect you can spend ten years beefing up your truck, but what good is it if you never use it for what its made for?
So don’t be scared to hook up with some friends or a local club and take your vehicle out wheeling the way it is. Then with every mod you install, you will notice what performance increase it gives you, and what new limits you can push your vehicle to. ;D
-
There is a difference in the mounting brackets on the 8 Valve and the 16 Valve. That is the only thing I ran into switching the powersteering from my 97 to my 89. And a quick call to Hawk and the brackets are on the way ;)

I wheeled my Kick at Moab 2 years ago, stock. Now, I'm up to 31's, and still running the manual steering, and the Calmini steering stabilizer. The stabilizer helps absorb some of the shock, when a rock tries to rip the wheel out of your hands, but it still hits pretty hard. And keep those thumbs OUT of the inside of the wheel when wheeling. Good way to break a thumb.
If you have the money and the fab skills, you can go full hydro ram for steering.
Here's Spidertrax's Steering Page:

Think Howe double ended ram, Howe high flow TC pump, Howe remote reservoir, howe full hydraulic orbital valve, etc.

i accctually went wheeling a few weeks ago in AZ with 3 stock 00-03 GV/trackers 1 sotck honda pilot( damn hoe has a read locker and full time AWD!)..and a stock 95 tracker with a skid plate..and yes that thing went everywhere my grandpas 00 tracker went
the only reason i dont wheel now is because i am affraid of breaking something..i also dont know any around me that wheels :( i live near sacromento in Cali.,.so i am not sure how much wheeling there is here

thanks for the suggestion on thumbs out..probably saved me another round of x-rays lol
i also have no fab skills at all..:( planning on learning just gota get the welder and stuff(its in the list)
i have also seen that hydraulic steering thing mentioned before..isnt that not street legal? i dont know if my lil truck will need anyhting that major lol
thanks for all the advise guys =) now go over yo mt break thread.,..i need more help :(

Heh, breaking stuff is as much of the sport as pulling jeeps up a hill. ;D
If you beef up one piece, the next piece that its attached to will break instead. It's inevitable.
Half of the sport is sitting in your garage wrenching on your truck while you slam back a few beers. I haven’t been able to take my truck off road for the last few weeks because I'm discovering more and more pieces that are worn out and need replacing.
Even though it’s hard on the bank account, I'm enjoying every step of the way.

Oh, man, buzz up US50 to the Rubicon Trail! ;D
There are a LOT of wheelers around you, they just mostly hang out on Pirate. Rough crowd, lots of hazing of noobies. I can probably get you a hookup with somebody there that'll "treat you nice"...
-
that would be awesome bob...=) id really really apreciate it
and the rubicon trail is near me??..i find it hard for people to take me seriously when i ask to wheel with them because i drive a tracker..they seem to think it is the biggest pos on the road..even though stock for stock the tracker would keep up with most anything
the reason i am affraid to break things is because i havent had a steady job since i was givin this car..but i am going to be working for the rail road it seems..so the bank will be able to take some breakage =)
-
Sh1t,ain't nobody around here to wheel with much less somewhere to wheel. To ride my 4-wheeler LEGALLY,I've gotta drive 65-70 miles away to Lynchburg,Va
-
hey if i had someone to wheel with a good spot to wheel id drive 70 miles =)..hell all the 4 wheelin i have done i have had to drive 800 miles ::)

Get use to it. People talk shit about any thing that is different. My club members that use to rag me because I bought a Sidekick now defend it's honor even when I'm not around. I would show up to midnight rides with my stock Kick and have drunk rednecks in full size PU's bitching because they did not want me to hold them up, or they would ask who I was riding with. Bt the end of every run, they were ones running up the trail to watch the Kick conquer an obsticle and cheering me on ;)

I went up this gnarly ass hill out at TDS a couple
of weeks ago, and all I heard after was good job,
and that's pretty F***ing impressive 8) these were
coments from guys I didn't even know. The funest
time was watching a 300HP buggy that couldn't climb
that gnarly ass hill, and I cranked right up it, took a
second try, as that damn buggy dug big holes at the top
when he couldn't make it up.
