Post by: explosivo on March 18, 2004, 06:03:03 PM
Ok, I want to get a CB for the Tracker, but I have no clue where to start. What are some good sites to read on the subject? What radios do you guys have?

I would just go to walmart and get one. The antenna is what will make the differenceYou will want to get a ggod one. Radio shak has some. I have about 8-10 mile range on the interstate with a simple magnet mount.

I got the Cobra that has all the controls in the hand held.  Works great and you don't have to worry about where to put the radio.  Seems to have a good range.

Then I got a "Fire Stick" antenna.  Went to a CB/radio store bought it there and had them tune it.

To tune it, they put a meter inline with the antenna sent out a signal (with the mike) and adjusted the antenna.

Hmm... I don't know if there are any stores that specialize in CB radios around here (fucking boondocks). Would Radio Shack do tuning?

i have a realistic (radio shack special) works good, i think you will pay more for the antenna than the radio if you get a good antenna, mine also has a spot for a loud speaker jack (incase soem one pisses you off) ;)

i prefer the not magnet ones

The place I got my antanna also sold sat. dishes, TV antannas and cell phones.  Look in the phone book under CB radios.

I don't know about where you are but the Radio Shacks around here (Michigan) stopped selling CB's last year.

I have notice that the really fancy one's don't seem to hold up in a 4x4.  The people I know that have them, they don't seem to work 1/2 the time.  So I would say just get a cheap one.

dont know if  radio shack would tune if for you but they do make a SRW (standing wave ratio) meter for the tunable fiberglass whips just install the SRW between your CB and antenna cable and mesure SRW on channel 20 on your CB is should be 2.1 or less now you ajust this by removing the plastic cap at the top of your tunable whip turn the screw at the top in small amounts one turn or so put the plastic cap back on and recheck the SRW  radio shack has all of the parts just ask them  this is what they told me to do    so far so good  hope this helps you

Well that's no good (I live in Michigan, too).

I guess I'll go consult the telephone book. :)

The BEST  place is online.
Kens CB Sales in Las Vegas takes factroy new radios, tunes 'em up (what they call tweaked & peaked), and sells 'em in a package.  That's where I got mine & it performs very well!

Ask for the PIRATE special!

Here's another site...

;D

I run a Uniden PC78 and I run it with a 102" whip antenna sometimes, and a Wilson Firestick sometimes... it works well enough.. but I've also had Ranger 2950s, and Galaxy DX99V's in the past...

I got my cheapo CB at WalMart.  Can't remember how much.  Antenna at a local truckstop.  They usually have the best selection.
We recently picked up a handheld CB.  I think we gave more for it than the mounted radio.  But it is great if you do much trail riding and want to spot someone.  Its far more useful than we imagined.  Of course, I would want to have a mounted radio first.

You can try amazon.com. Got my CB and Antenna there during one of their free shipping sales.

truck stops have good selections of antenna mounts and cable.
