Title: Adventure ideas for 2017 - YOUR INPUT NEEDED!
Post by: ebewley on December 10, 2016, 09:32:44 AM
Hello All - We've been thinking about new and exciting things to do with our Suzuki next year and have some ideas but also want to hear from you! Please chime in with event and activities you'd like to see and would possibly attend. Thinking of this as a 'brainstorm' session so any idea is a good one... really!

To seed the discussion:

1. Events for next year like 'another one over' this time the final leg which will have us exploring SE Idaho, NE Utah, and W Wyoming...

2. Suzuki Saturdays - local run every second Saturday of the month (the first 'group' of these would center around us in Oregon but could be taken up and done anywhere really)

3. Retool the ZUKIWORLD Challenge to make it a rally. Really loose GPS Navigation style rally with fun things to see and do, prizes and party/camp at the end. (Think Gambler 500 style)

Those are just some examples... What do you think?

poker run is fun

Definitely! Have you done one in the past that you really liked? What things did you like?

Thanks for participating...

I would enjoy a multi day overland expedition, whether high desert, desert or mountain either would be fun. But enter the trail on day 1 and don't come out for 3 or 4 days. preferably exiting in a different location than entering.

We'll definitely be doing that next June-ish with the 'last one over adventure' (see #1 on brainstorm seeds list) .. could you do that one? Would something else be more appealing?

Have you done route 3?  It is my favorite...from Big Lake near Hoodoo all the way down to CA.
Views of crater lake and cascade peaks, and numerous lakes.  It is a few hundred miles; a 2 day trip with some pushing, an easy 3 day trip.
http://www.oohva.org/OBCDR/route3.html (http://www.oohva.org/OBCDR/route3.html)
The last time I drove the route was almost 10 years ago.
Attached the GPX file from GPSXchange from a guy who recently completed the trip.

You know, I haven't done that one... It could be a good possibility for a long weekend trip. Probably easy to drop off the trail and stay in a motel if so inclined too???

I like the idea of a GPS guided rally.

There was a guy from Russia on here a few years ago, they used cell phone pictures to verify that you made it to each point on the rally.

One of the things we did at the Team Trophy Challenge was a GPS Scavenger hunt.  You had a set of coordinates and had to locate the bucket to mark your punch-card.  3 locations per GPS, with other ones being 300 yards in X direction and a time limit to get all of them and back to the base.  It was a lot of fun.

I'm definitely thinking of doing the 'gps rally' with the pic of your rig at each location as proof. Could do it like a poker run so that time isn't an issue... more places you were the better 'hand' you get for winning prizes...

maybe something like that?

hey eric I've been talking with zuki guys BC Suzuki club on FB up here in BC and they are holding a event Aug 5 in British Columbia  and I mentioned a whipsaw wheel weekend and they said that they would love to help me with this  event full weekend trip so that us Canadians can show southern neighbors some nice country of the north. all I need is a date and I will try to set a date with them for a whipsaw  run and go from there

Thus would be great! Let me check schedules and logistics... do you have a general address, town, or coordinates that the bulk of the activities would be centered around?

Yay!

I don't know what type or wheeling is involved but I hear its good wheeling

I have wheeled with around 10 or so of them and they are all good guys/gals. Good, safe fun and everyone helps each other out on the trails and a huge variety of rigs. I have been to TSF with them a few times, people just post up in the group when they are planning on going and whoever can make it joins them. It should be a very fun trip! I will keep this thread posted as to any changes that may occur, but those are the set dates at the moment, leaving at 6am from PDX on October 6th, 2017 until October 13th, 2017!

What I have read is that Aug & Sept are best times depending on the snow pack.  It is either one of the toughest trails on west coast or a long back road run?  It could be run in a long day or you need at least three days.  "First Canadian trail to be added to the BFG Outstanding Trails program. Has everything from bottomless mud pits, tight technical sections, gnarly hill climbs, great camping, alpine meadows and so much more! "
https://www.wikiloc.com/wikiloc/view.do?id=192621 (https://www.wikiloc.com/wikiloc/view.do?id=192621)  and lots more links, photo's, and video's.

Sounds like a good run (and not far for me also).

The Whipsaw is looking like a yes! We're thinking of scheduling it around Labor Day weekend (US)... that should be late enough for a frost to kill the skeeters??? Anyone from the area got an idea aboot that? This will also give people plenty of time to obtain passports if needed.

Thoughts?

I just ran the Whipsaw trail in August and it was 100% AWESOME. You can easily do it in 2 days if you keep moving. We had a group of 11 vehicles from various corners of BC, we all met up and camped on Thursday night just outside of Princeton, and then around 9AM Friday we hit the trail, and by around 4PM Saturday we were out the other end. The trail is perfect for multi-day camping as there is the beautiful Wells Lake with 2 large bush campsites right in the halfway point of the trail, and then at the end of the trail there is Lodestone Lake with a BC Forestry campsite there. The trail is a nice mix of easy/moderate trail with plenty of optional harder lines for those with built-up rigs. My brother took a stock 2007 Jeep JK Unlimited and another guy took a stock 2008 Tacoma 4wd base model (no lockers) over this trail, and it was definitely pushing these stock rigs to the maximum limit of their capabilty. Everyone else in our group was running 31s to 35s and had no problems except when we went looking for trouble. So it's not "hard-core" by any means, but it's not easy-peasy either. I would recommend at minimum 29" tires, full skidplates, basic recovery and survival gear, and at least one other vehicle along if you run into trouble. If I recall correctly it is around 90km from start to finish and once you are in it, there is no way out other than back the way you came or continuing to the end. The bugs were not much of an issue (depends what you are used to though, I am from farther north so we tend to have it worse). I think the earliest you can run the trail is around the beginning of July, due to the snow taking a long time to melt, and then it would probably be pretty wet and mosquito infested til it dries up. Parts of it are close to 6000' so it starts getting snow around mid-Sept, possibly earlier even. Here are some pics for your viewing pleasure:

This is the bypass to a harder obstacle called "IFS Ledge". The bypass is really tight, but if you want to take the really easy way out there's a mud pit at the bottom you can plow through and avoid body damage.

I thought for a moment I might make it but I've got a fair bit of traveling to do this summer with my family for various other events which take priority...just did whipsaw last year anyway so I don't feel too bad about it. Plus we are working some wheeling into our travels so it's not a total loss. Maybe one year we'll have to have a Suzuki meet way up in northern BC!
