Title: 2.5 V6 with possible broke chain
Post by: 99Trackerconv on January 13, 2017, 03:26:20 PM
I have a chance to buy a 01 Tracker LT 4x4 with a "broken" timing chain for $450!

He said it sounds like nothing is moving except the crankshaft.

What are the odds I do a compression check on it and comes up good? But if it does, how do I get it back in time? Do I need a scanner or anything? Or just the old fashioned way (#1 TDC and line up the timing marks)

I believe if the timing chain went then motor will need full rebuild of top end cause valve will be bent ....but I could be wrong

Could it be possible that the tensioner broke and made the chain loose? And not caused damage?

I think there's a better chance of pigs flying.

The odds are slim to nil - if his description is accurate, you're going to be shopping for a replacement engine - he's obviously decided that he doesn't want the hassle, which is why he's selling.  If that were near me, I'd take it and park it out back for the parts.

And yes, pigs can fly - as cargo ;)

If I buy it, I will either get another 2.5 or I'll get a 5.3/4l60e combo and do that. It will not just sit and be used for parts,  it's way too nice looking.

I would agree that for $450 its a good project car, and would also agree with Fordem as to pigs flying.  I am looking forward to your project.

Thanks,  I've been messaging the seller and keeping him up to date on when I can buy it.  He said that nobody has shown any interest in it other then me and that it's at his rental property so he couldn't take any more pictures.

I'm hoping I can get it soon. Just so I can have it to start messing with.
