Had an email exchange with the BC wild fire service earlier in the week.

It doesn't look promising for the ban to be lifted in time for us to enjoy the trail. So with a heavy heart, I'm cancelling our adventure. Hopefully there is enough time for people to make alternative plans and still enjoy the last bits of summer. This trip will be on our list for 2018 but will be much earlier in the year!
Thanks, Eric

Doing some mapping of the area for 'making 'da plan' and noticed that Kalowna and Alter Ego Motorsports is about an hour away. Thinking it'd be cool to go see their shop and meet the team face to face. Anyone interested in something like that? (haven't reached out to them yet, just gauging interest)

-Eric

ya it isn't that far to Kelowna from there. are you talking about Hedley? there is also Apex mountain that is close

Eric,
I thought about making a trip to that area, when I had the rig in Seattle. It would also be nice to pick up a bumper with no shipping.

one valley over from the whipsaw there is a bad fire burning right now .. watching concerned ..

Want to jam some of this stuff in to... we need more vacation time. From the Princeton City Website:
Ghost Towns
There are six ghost towns in the Princeton area, three of which can still be visited.
Granite Creek
In 1885, John Chance (what a name for a prospector!) discovered gold nuggets in Granite Creek. This led to the 1885 gold rush and the community of Granite Creek was born. Granite Creek was destroyed by fire in 1907; several log buildings from when Granite Creek was rebuilt are still left. A campsite is located across the river from where the town centre used to be.
Blakeburn
Near Granite Creek is Blakeburn. This community began as the site of an underground coal mine in 1912. A mine explosion in 1930 killed 45 men and by 1940 the mine was closed. Blakeburn contains the largest collection of buildings and structures on Lodestone Mountain and they await the curious history buff.
Allenby
Constructed in 1916, Allenby was the site of the 2,000 ton concentrator and mill plant used to process ore from Copper Mountain. Many concrete foundations remain in Allenby today, along with ruins of what once was a busy company town that had 68 homes and all the comforts required by a community.
To find out more about these ghost towns, visit the Princeton and District Museum and Archives or take the DVD self-guided Ghost Town tour.
Fossils and Natural History
The Pollard Wing of the Princeton and District Museum and Archives houses one of the most extensive mineral and fossil collections in British Columbia, and contains a separate research section. Joe Pollard's extensive collection comes from the Princeton area, North America, and around the world.
The Pollard Wing also houses a special butterfly collection containing the moths and butterflies collected at the river level on the Similkameen one summer. It is a perfect place to trace the geological and botanical history of the region. School groups are welcome.
The most popular part of the Pollard collection is the fluorescent minerals. When the short and long ray black light is shone upon them, minerals such as calcite, fluorite, quartz and willemite glow and sparkle in wonderful shades of orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and white.

Thinking about hitting up one of these ghost mining towns... Found some stuff on Blakeburn from a BC website:

I saw that today... Planning on getting ahold of the fire authority in BC on Monday but as you know it, are these restrictions usually or rarely lifted? Here in Oregon, fire restrictions usually last until the fall rains come... So I'm very pessimistic now that this will happen but will find out more in the next couple days.
What do you think?

That is great! it looks fun too...

no worries eric there is always next yr

no worries eric there is always next yr
... speaking of next year
Thinking about mid-June next year... Do you think that'd be a good time?
-Eric
-
all depends on what kind of snow fall we get
-
;)
-
I would NOT count on getting through the Whipsaw in June. I was in the area in May of 2016 and there was still easily 2 feet of snow in the shade as soon as we started gaining some elevation. BC has had plenty of snow this winter (most in the world I hear) so I'd mark your calendar a month or two later. When I ran the trail it was mid-August and it was perfect. It would probably still be fine in mid to late September. Usually snow hits the 6000 feet mark around October.
-
was talking with ebewley and he is thinking late july but dates haven't been set
-
Thanks for the good input and suggestions. So far, an exact date hasn't been selected.
-Eric
-
any date set yet eric ?
-
any date set yet eric ?
No, unforunately... I may try to put it after the Overland Rally in Washington and make a longer trip out of it all.. What is your group thinking of/about on this. Any real preference on time of year. I'd like to avoid the fires. :)
-Eric
-
I think that they are just waiting to hear about a date then go from there. I will ask bc Suzuki club and see where everyones heads at
-
when is the overland rally
-
any updates on this? snow is melting, whipsaw might not be open soon yet though with this years record snow ... didn't hear about anybody trying it yet
-
BC Suzuki club which is a facebook club is going to head up there labour day long weekend I believe there is 10 trucks going as of now BRD HNTR I believe is coming up from WA state and Eric is still on the fence as there school starts earlier than ours you are welcome to join us and join the facebook club if you are on there
-
So, my guess is this never happened?
-
So, my guess is this never happened?
You don't have to guess.. It didn't. :( We'll reset the clock for next year.
-Eric
-
I had it set up for sept long weekend , and I had to work and everyone cancelled but one person in bc Suzuki club they went and had a blast. they met up with other people that were doing the trail there are a bunch of pictures on bc Suzuki club on FB
-
Right. Now that you mention it, I remember seeing the pics. I just saw some of the 4WDABC guys' pics from last weekend up there and it looks slick with rain and juuuust about ready for some snow.
-
some went there this weekend and had snow
-

When is 'Too Late' to go on that trail?
-Eric
-
When is 'Too Late' to go on that trail?
-Eric
now that the snow is hitting the mountain tops.... we shall eventually get there eric
-
now that the snow is hitting the mountain tops.... we shall eventually get there eric
I was asking because I was thinking about doing a last minute run up there to hit the trail before there's too much snow. -Eric
-
To be on the safe side I wouldn't plan the event any later than mid-September, but even then, snow's possible. I've been up in the mountains not far from there on the first weekend of September and got snow. It's not the end of the world I suppose but even 1" of snow can make an easy trail pretty treacherous.
