Title: OK, HELP!  Roll Bar Padding?
Post by: Bobzooki on March 15, 2004, 01:29:14 AM
I looked at roll-bar padding choices on Summit Racing's web site, and HOLY COW!!!  :o  Anywhere from something like $3.50 per 3 foot piece, through $24 for a three foot piece!!!  What's the best choice, and WHY?

Thanks!
Bob

I went to a local construction supply company and bought high grade water pipe insulation ;) It's been in there for years and is still holding up good.

Bob, go to Wal-Mart and buy some noodles  ;D They are long tubes used as pool toys.  Pretty cheap too. I think they come in 8 ft sections. They come in all kinds of colors and are just right for a roll bar. Get some neon green ones.  ;D

Aw, c'mon Art.  Neon Green?  That's pretty close to the color of the Gnewt.  With a green body, and red mirrors, I'm thinking yellow might be best...   ::)

The difference is in the density of the foam used in the padding. the $3.50 piece is for non-lethal areas. i.e-legs, arms, noiwhere near the head. The $24 piece? you guessed it! around everone's noggins. It's about the same difference as riding a motorcycle with a batters helmet or a motorcyle helmet.

Okay, so  I just put a rollbar from a soft top into my tintop this weekend.  I was wondering what to use for padding and here is the answer!
Noodles is a genius idea, but how would you core out one so that it looked good?

The high grade pipe insulation does for whatever size tubing you are using, but it only comes in black.

You can paint it with vinyl paint or you can make a cover out of any material of any color.  Close it up with a zipper, snaps, or self adhesive hook and loops.

the stuff we use have the tape on each side all you gotta do is peel off the cover on each side then stick them together, it holds pretty good

Did you have to buy a certin type of paint? A asumed that the paint would eat up the padding like it does stryofoam (sp?) Will the paint crack if when the paddinf is pressed on or is it flexable enough to hold?
