Title: 1988 Samurai tachometer - can it be done?
Post by: mammonista on October 19, 2017, 08:06:25 AM
The gauges in my newly acquired '88 Samurai suck. In just about any light (daytime or illuminated at night) they are barely readable. At any speed I don't really want to take my eyes off the road for more than a second to find out exactly how fast I'm going, engine temp, or fuel in the tank. Added to that is the lack of a factory tach! (ugh!)
So I (foolishly?) bought a domestic instrument cluster from the land of the rising sun and installed those cool white gauge backs. But as soon as the gauges arrived I figured out I might be screwed as the tach says 3-cylinder and there's a 'turbo' indicator among the idiot lights.
So am I out of luck? Will the speedo, coolant temp, and gas gauge work? Is there anyway to trick the tack into working with 4 pots instead of 3? How the heck do you get the cluster off without pulling the steering wheel and the entire dash?
thanks in advance for any input!
