Is there a Eaton truetrac differential available for the rear for 99-05 vitara/tracker? I’d love one but I can’t seem to locate a match. I know sometimes they don’t have their application guide listed fully, as they swore they didn’t have one for 2012 Tacoma but I installed one on that truck and it totally transformed the drive feel of the rig in 2 wd it was phenomenal afterward.
-
As far as I'm aware Eaton has nothing for any model Suzuki, I do believe that Suzuki Sport did offer an LSD, however, it might be difficult to locate one now.

A quick ebay search turned these up ...

Dude you’re awesome that’s it! A Torsen style rear diff! I want! So, these came factory on some models? Does my 2003 tracker 4x4 have open diff or one of these?
-
Hmmm these all appear to be from Russia. They must have a mfg over there that makes an Eaton style Torsen lsd. That’s friggin awesome. I’m going to put this on the short list of wants. Ps if anyone hasn’t heard of a truetrac or Torsen diff they are brilliant. They do not have friction clutch packs to wear out or dirty the oil, they don’t require special friction additives in oil, they don’t restrict wheel differential speeds, and they seamlessly and immediately transfer torque as needed. I live on a gravel street that’s a pretty steep slope and with this device I can back up hill easily on the gavel. Wet streets are also much more secure with one. They also respond very well to the “poor mans posi” method of torque modulation. This is why Humvee uses them in both ends. They just work! Here’s how.

I don't know what style of LSD the Suzuki Sport unit was, in terms of availability, it was not a "dealer orderable" option in the sense that the car could be ordered with one, but, it was available for order and installation, it is my understanding that it was factory fitted to at least one model, but only in Europe.
Regarding the Torsen, I have a Pajero that "supposedly" has a Torsen LSD in the rear, I'm not 100% certain if it does, because a Torsen behaves like an open diff if you have one wheel off the ground, so there is no way to really test it short of disassembling the rear end, which I'm not about to do - it is noticeably less "tail happy" in the wet than my GV.
-
The easy test is what I describe on my gravel street. If you can back uphill on loose gravel without a lot of wheel hopping drama, then I’d guess it’s got a Torsen of some type. I mean, assuming you can select 2wd on that, and that the rear wheels are the drive when in 2wd.
-
Okay back to this I’ve been researching like mad to try and determine if my rear diff is in fact good to go for this Russian lsd. I’ve read some mention of a change to the rears on these trucks some time in the second gen run. But when and what? The Russian says that it will for up to 2004 tracker, but why 04 and not 05? Do I have a 12 bolt ring gear? Gah!
If it were summit I’d order it and try but the Russia factor has me a little nervous to order without certainty.
-
Welcome to the real world - you folks in the US have it easy when it comes to returning incorrectly ordered (or supplied) parts, for the rest of us, it can amount to you bought it, it's yours, and that's one of the reasons I don't have an air locker in the back of my GV, I can't risk dropping a grand without being certain it'll fit.
The only way you're going to get the question answered is to pull the rear third, count the number of bolts and measure the diameter of the differential case. The Suzuki parts catalog shows the same part numbers for the rear differential case from 99~05, if you have a manual transmission, but, automatics had a change between the 00 and 01 years.
I'm fairly certain you have a 12 bolt diff, but, whether it's a 108 or a 118mm ID is where the real question is, and then you have a Tracker, all of my info is Suzuki and not everything gets carried over.
-
Well that’s a pisser. I asked the seller. They responded that they sell a lot of these to us market and never had a return. Not sure if that’s because the part fit or because you can’t return to Russia lol. I guess I’ll be the test mule on this as I really want a lsd on this thing. It will cost half of what the whole truck did, but hey that’s only because I got it so cheap.
-
Back in the day, I took the Detroit Locker'ed third member assembly out of my 1997 Sidekick and bolted it right into my 2001 Vitara. If you're swapping the entire third member it doesn't matter how many bolts the ring gear has. Never had any issues with it. There were no clutch packs, LSD additives, or such things on that locker either, but it was pretty quirky to drive on the street, especially parking lots. At least with a welded diff you know it's always going to chirp, not BA-BANG and then kick the rear end out in the middle of a corner!
-
Yeah I don’t think I want a locker. That’s the beauty of the truetrac it improves 2wd operation as well as 4x.

Did you ever follow through?? Did you get the Russian 'truetrac; ???

No I’ve been saving up or rather trying to justify it for a while. So far, can’t.

Thx for the reply, The specs listed by the sellers on ebay make it hard to tell if it will fit anyway.
I can't justify an ARB but also don't want a lunchbox locker either as the '97 Sport is intended to be daily driver and we get Ice here in Va alot.
-
Yep, that’s kind of why I’m locked up on it too. After owning a true Trac in a Tacoma I really rather have one over a locker of any variety. The true Trac improves gravel and wet road and ice performance SO much where a locker either makes no difference (arb) or makes it downright dangerous (autolocker) that is take the true Trac any day, and get an arb in front before the rear.
I’m fairly certain these Russian units will fit, but I’m not 100% which makes it hard to throw $500 at (not to mention a lot of nasty work to change out)

Perhaps this photo might help for 108mm vs 118mm 12 bolt.

Hmm, maybe. But that’s front vs rear or? What are they trying to telling us?

Seems like all the Ebay ads refer to the same LSD unit from VAL-Racing Some ads are better than others at explaining.
The ones from a seller at 'jetready.ru' seems to provide greater details and my '97 Sport is listed, as rear only.
Regardless, It looks like you can expect to pay 25-35% of the overall cost in shipping.
I'm not as sold on ARB Air actuated units, The one I have in my Samurai (Toyota Front) bleeds off air and kicks on the compressor. Seems like they all do it.
I don't want a 'lunchbox' locker for a street-able vehicle, I'd love an electric actuated locker but unless I'm willing to swap out an entire rear end and bracketry its not happening.
I'm not willing to write it off and it requires some more research and actual user info, not just seller details so I'll continue to look.

Yes please dig up some info on these. I’m sure if we spoke Russian we could find some info on them. The zooks seem to be well represented in Russia.

More info on https://4x4com.ru/ using google translate and currency converter, 20,000 rubles works out at the time of this writing as $318.80
The Ebayers seem to like their markups.. And their cut on shipping too. Now to see if the Manufacturer would sell direct. Or even if some place like https://4x4com.ru/ would ship to the US.
Can't hurt to do some legwork.
-
Ask them to do a group buy. Might be able to twist my arm on one.

Looks like they are on sale right now at the mfg, $240.
I might be able to acquire the services of a translator to facilitate this.

ARB's are similar to winches. They are pricey, but when you need them their value shows. I do not use mine much even on trails, but on trails I always have my air compressor pressurized and a flip of the switch and I locked. On Moab's "slick rock" turning with the rear locked is more difficult so it is easier to only have them locked when actually needed.
I ran the "lunch box" lockers for over a year and would use a spool before installing another one. (I know "it was not set up correctly", but I could never find correct.)
-
I’d love an arb in front for the reasons you say, but not enough to justify the cost. The torsen rear diff is a whole different animal however and can’t be compared to a locker.
-
Well I contacted Val racing. They replied right away and kind,y said they don’t ship abroad but gave me an email of a dealer for them who will. I wrote them and he also replied quickly but just sent me back to one of the more expensive eBay results. So, we are back to eBay I guess. There are several stores in Russia offering them but I don’t speak Russian. And I’d rather rely on eBay anyway because they offer protections.

Well having to go through ebay does offer the protections but it comes with the additional fees for shipping costs and you can't get the sales That kind of stinks.
-
I know. Well I’m not sure how to proceed. I guess 450$ isn’t bad considering. Just sucks when you see the actual price is only $240 on sale right now.

It's still less than half the price of an ARB.. I do like my ARB.. mostly but I've never been able to completely solve the bleed down no matter how hard I've tried. The ARB is more than I paid for the 97 Sport entirely, And then having to pay to get them setup (I will setup trail rig 3rds but not one for the street).
-
Yes it’s a good deal. Funny, I had no problem putting one in my Tacoma for 550$ but it was a 20k$ rig, this tracker was only 1100$ so it seems odd to put a 445$ diff in it lol. But, I like the rig enough and I do think it would benefit from it especially living where I do on gravel. I know I’m getting closer to pulling the trigger because I bought gear oil at other night lol.
-
Initial cost of a vehicle shouldn't determine how much you can invest in it (budget does). If you have already used this type of traction control and know that you like its performance, then that should make the decision easier.
-
You sir are a terrible influence! And I ordered one. Shipping from Russia now.
Anyone have good lead on differential side bearings?
-
I'm pretty certain LowRange OffRoad will have them.

I might have been told that before.
I am sure that many will be interested in how well this works for you.

Still can’t really tell how the hell these things work.
