Title: Warn 8274 mounting on Sidekick
Post by: Ridjobradi on March 16, 2018, 08:41:46 AM
I picked up a used and abused Warn 8274 winch recently, cheap.  The cheap price will be offset by the rebuild cost, but still better than a new one.   I am not sure when I will have time for the winch rebuild, but I don't have a bumper yet anyway.

I am debating about selling the 8274 and getting a lower profile winch.  The concerns are mostly with air flow into my Sidekick's radiator and the approach angle.  If I mount the winch lower to get more air flow, it will decrease the approach angle.

Is anyone running an 8274 on a Kick?  Have you seen any issues.  I guess I could always make it a receiver mount.

Darnold87 has done this on his sidekick and it looks great. He used a non-winch Trail Tough bumper and made the bracketry to hold the winch. Try PM'ing him.

I love the Warn 8274.  I've restored 16 of them or so to new condition, including powdercoat and upgraded motors.  They're easy to work on and most parts are available on Amazon.
They may seem overkill for a Suzuki but they're not.  The extra cable length is handy and the line speed is fast, especially if you upgrade to a 6hp motor.  Mine covers the front grill and had no effect on the radiator cooling efficiency.
Like Eric said, mine is a basic trail tough tube bumper and I cut off the hoop and built a different mount for the winch.  I'll attach a few pics.  :)

Thanks darnold87.  I ordered the rebuild kit and bearings when I bought the winch. I haven't replaced the motor yet. Have you tried any of the non Warn motors or just used the factory replacements?

How much line are you running and have run synthetic line?

Here's some info for rebuilding the 8274...

I run 125ft of 5/16" steel.  Rope is cool but not tough enough for my liking.
Plus I occasionally run a Zipline on my cable.
I run the Warn 9.5xp 6hp motor.  It's wicked strong and fast.  I've also ran the stock 2.5hp, and 4.0hp.  I think the standard series winch motor is 4.7hp these days.  I'd stick with the Warn brand.  Pay attention if your motor uses a keyway or splines on the gear.  If you order a new motor, it'll likely be splines, and if your winch is old, it may be a keyway.  Worst case, you may have to order a new gear for the motor...

Thanks for the link.  I read that one before I ordered the rebuild kit.  I will most likely relocate my controls under the hood.

The forward mounting of the 8274 works great for making the tube bumper into a winch bumper.  I would use your idea, except there aren't any tube bumpers for a Sport.

I ordered 95' of 3/8" synthetic, that I haven't installed yet.  I may switch to 5/16" for the extra length.  I don't have have the rocks you do near Crater Lake and don't get to hardcore wheel often.

I will check the gear when I do the rebuild.  I don't think I am going to powder coat, but it will definitely get sandblasted and repainted.

Duplicolor wheel coating HWP102 Graphite is a great paint option for this application...

I have a wireless winch control (and still have the corded control on a plugin) that is awesome.  It works out to at least 20 yards, so remote winching is possible.  They are usually under $20 and very worth it.  I recommend them and you don't have to run any wires into the cab.

BRD HNTR - I am definitely interested in the wireless option.  I already have a Carling switch, but haven't run the wiring to the dash yet.

I got mine from Amazon, and they have both key fobs, and transmitters now.  I think they are worth <$20 and hook directly to your winch control box, no extra wiring needed (not counting main battery wires to winch).
