Newb question but will the cv axles from a 1996 tracker work in a 1990 tracker

No, I don't believe they will. They changed the spline count at some point between, I think in '96. Any earlier years should work though.

Correct. 96 and later had 26 spline front axles (although, I ran across a 95 once that had 26 spline front axles). The earlier ones have 22 spline front axles.
