Title: Calmini Sidekick Roll Cage?
Post by: Bobzooki on March 01, 2004, 09:04:17 AM
Anybody here running one?  I really need to have some extra beef in my 2-door.  Just wondering if anybody has one, if they had any problems installing it, etc.

I've got one in my green Sidekick. Works good EXCEPT if you're tall, then it'll be uncomfortably close. I'm 6'5"...

I also have the Calmini Rollcage and I like it. The one little problem I had was no instuctions on how it went together. Some little floor plates didn't get used and I ran the rear runners off the main hoop down to the floor instead of the wheelwell which is a better place I think but backseat don't fit (don't use it anyways).
To save from hitting your head find some rollbar padding, The hole is off centered. It only takes 1 hit and you'll know you'll need it.

P.S. The front V-bar faces forward/ upward otherwise it blocks the rearview mirror.

Thanks for the pics.  Mine's on a truck, on the way to me now (I hope).  $150 to ship it!   :o  Now I gotta find somebody that can do all the welding on it!

How much welding is required?  It sounds like they ship it mostly assembled, for it to need to be sent by motor freight.  How does it mount to the floorboards, and is this strong enough?

Oh, and what's the distance between the two top pipes?

Just can't wait to figure all this out for myself...

That was one problem I had was finding some one to weld it. must shops charged 50 bucks an hour and couldn't tell me how long it would take. My little bro works as a mech and got a freind to do it for 100 bucks and it took 5hrs. We managed to put the rear down tubes to the floor but I think its a stronger spot than the wheelwells.
I don't live in a great nieghborhood so the Trackers always in the garage at night.

I've seen the results of the petroworks "sport bar" in a sami that rolled, and was extreemly unimpressed with it's strength.

How do the calmini ones compare?

If my life may be on the line...

Perhaps it's a good starting plain for modifying further???

There is a reason they call them sport bars. Elimination of liability.

It's 1.75 X .120 DOM tubing.  Don't know about Petroworks cage.  Anybody rolled one of these beasties?

:o  Of COURSE!  It's probably made from recast flywheels from gyroscopes, in inertial navigation stable platforms, so would be almost impossible to tip over!

The petroworks cage i was refering to is found on the http://bbs.zuwharrie.com/  board under, how to : enlarging wheelwells.

just read down and there is a link...

after looking at it for awhile, i guess a 3.5 roll it's not too bad. but i would want better anyway.

Well, it's here.  Six pieces of tubing, none of it is notched.  Came on a pallet.  Along with my new exhaust, and Centerforce Clutch.

Got a guy lined up to do the welding.   ;D

I noticed on the site 2 different part numbers and prices. Do you know what the differances are between them?

Yeah, the cheap one is just the main hoop, over your head, just behind the front seats, and the braces, back to the wheel wells.  The expensive one adds the two front pieces, from the floor, around the dash, and up the windshield pillars to the roof, and back to the main hoop, and the piece that goes between them.  I'll see if I can photo-chop the full bar pic to what the basic bar must look like.

OK, I would guess the cheaper version would look like this:

NOTE:  Calmini calls these SPORT bars, not Roll Bars - protects them from liability, as they have no control over the installaton.

Just make sure you point the front v-bar upwards alittle otherwise you'll see in in the rearview mirror.
