Title: Transmission Problems
Post by: lil_Truck on March 06, 2004, 03:13:19 AM
Is anyone else having problems with their tranys?  I'm on my second one (used with about 50,000 on it).  I'm having trouble with 2nd gear.  It won't go into 2nd.  If I sit there and play with it, it will sometimes go in.

It's not the sincro.  I'm not grinding gears, it's like something is stopping it from going into gear.  Someone once mention there's some type of plastic piece that gets worn out and gets in the way???

Also, has anyone heard of a trany rebuild kit for these, or where I could get parts from (other than dealer)?

Thanks

Are you sure the clutch cable isnt streching? Mabe try adjusting it up and see if it helps. I gone through a few cables and thats the first sign to a snapping cable. Oddly enough that was just what happened to 3 days ago. I was at the mall and couldnt get it into second gear... pedal felt fine.   :-/ I adjusted it up a couple turns and drove home. By the time I got to work the next day it was out again. I put in a new cable and all is good again.

I called around and found part stores asking around $80. Just for kicks I called the GM dealer down the street and they wanted $60. ??? So I bought the OEM one.  :-/

The cable is about a year old.  I could try to adjust it again.  But I can push in the clutch and get it into reverse without any gear grinding.

This happened to my last transmission.  I put a new clutch and pressure plate when I replaced the trany.  Had the flywheel surface, new pilot bearing...

After the trany was in it worked great!!  Now it won't go into 2nd again???

When I get the chance I'm tairing down the old one and checking it out.

Now that I think about it first gear was difficult too. Reverse did work fine though.

Pull your shifter and check the bushing that the base of your shifter rides in. I had one crack to the pooint of the shifter being sloppy and 2&4 were hard to shift into.
