Hey does anyone know the part number for the "steel" front 3rd housing for the GV?
Will any year of the GV third bolt onto my axel housing?
I went to the Suzuki dealer today and the guy at the parts desk was as useless as a tit on a bull. So I told him that I would go find the part number for him so he didnt have to do his job :P

Do a search for XL.7 or XL-7 3rd member that is the one you want it is steel AND beefier than the GV. The crossmember mount is the only difference but don't worry it's better....

No Problem... You may want to get the 3rd member to crossmember mounting system as well when your there. Or, you could junk yard it but you'll need the different mounting bracket.

Huh, I didn't know about the XL-7 front carrier, and the "snout mount". I did put a Grand Vitara (manual transmission) steel carrier in, with the same mount as the Sidekick aluminum carrier. When I broke my front carrier, the aluminum lug that the mount connects to, sheared right off. :o I figured the steel lug wouldn't have this problem!

Bob, think back a bit with me. It's 2002, we're in Moab, the XL7 is about a year old, You standing with me, next to my busted GV, looking at the aluminum XL7 diff that I had in my GV, noting the big beefy center mount (the one that cause me such grief finding) and it's oversized mounting boss that didn't break off, but instead, let the entire pig crack open like an egg?

I was telling everyone at the time that the XL7 had an improved mounting system. However the simple concept of steel pigs, which I learned of before AND STILL opted to choose the XL7 soda can, still eluded me.
Now everything it steel and no problems.
BTW- I'll be kicking in Saturday night or Sunday morning, depends if I have a co-pilot or I drive non-stop alone.

Ok I called the guy from the suzuki dealer and gave him the part number. He said that there was an automatic and a standard carrier?
Which one do I get?
Maybe he was talking about buying the whole 3rd itself (gears and all) because I don’t see why there would be a different carrier.
I also asked him about the mounting brackets and he asked me what year I wanted.
Heh why can't anything be simple? I thought the part number for the housing would be a straight shot, but they found a way to make things complicated.
Any help would be grateful. I just want to make sure I get the right parts.

Thats a good Question. The one I got had the mount Zig posted, so I redrilled and filed it a little thinner to make the old mount fit.

So you didnt use the new mount and just used your calmini one?
That brings up another question. Wasnt the Calmini mount designed to make the diff sit lower than stock?
Does the XL7 mount make the diff sit too high? or will that even be a problem?

The GV steel mount is like your calmini and/or stock mount, but steel (a tab with a couple of holes for the bolts to go through. The XL-7 is a large flat peice that bolts streight into the housing (not through a tab)

The XL-7 rubber bushing mount allowed enough 'twist' in it to line up good. I did need to do a bit-o-gringage on the bracket base.

Ohh, yeah...  Forgot about that, and now, I wish I woulda remembered that bit about the beefier mount.  I went with a GV manual carrier, so I have all steel, but I still have the original mount.  Well, time will tell - I know the mount is stronger than the aluminum tab on the old carrier, that I sheared completely off!
One other thing, that I'm not seeing in these install instructions - I put mine all together, and started adding diff fluid, and it came ruinning out on the floor!  There's a hole in the GV carrier - I have no idea what it's for - it's not threaded.  I just plugged it with a plastic cap & some RTV.  Here's a pic of the red cap in the carrier.

I have not heard of any one having any trouble with the GV mount ;) I went with the XL-7 after some prodding by Eric and Yankee Tim. I like to do different stuff any way ::) I almost did the leaking oil thing too. Luckily I slid under the Kick to show a friend my new Anvil and saw the hole that I forgot to plug. :P

Okay, Letter Man.  Add the silent E to Tim and whatcha get?  Time. ;)
Well, Time is telling you now.  My mount is tweeked.  And that's just lower gears, bigger muds and a V6.  Where it used to break when aluminum, now it doesn't.  Somehting gotta be the weak link, and it's the mount.  I figured it would happen soon or later, but figured it would once I was locked up front.  But no yard I could find had an XL front pig when I did mine as they were quite new.
I plan on taking a spare mount and welding in some reinforcement to stiffen it. Beefed Center Mount.

It's the port for the air line for the GV's shit-on-the-fly differential. ;D

Actually 170-175bhp now with the mods. I can run 120+ on the level and still have pedal. ;D

Oh ya, thanks for the info guys. I still havent picked up the housing but hopefully I'll get around to it on the weekend.
